I have been mostly eating... white rice! =====! interview !============================================================= Session Start: Wed Jan 06 04:01:32 1999 *** ^flex^ has joined #demojournal <^flex^> yo.. hello <^flex^> hit it =) 1st and in like all interviews... why the hell are you up at 5am??? <^flex^> Hehe, i code, so naturally i twist my life-cycle.. =) can you please tell us who you are and what is it you do? ;) <^flex^> My name is Stefan Sandberg 19 years old.. "In real life" i'm more or less out of work, but i'm involved in this weird program where we can do basically anything we want and get paid for it.. So we nagged a while and finally we got 2 computers and a compiler, so now we're doing a TG-demo for cash!, so expect a great demo.. =) humm... your doing a demo for cash? Thats interesting!!! where do i sign in? :D <^flex^> Yeah, we decided that the coolest thing to do a project about was a TG-demo.. So we're working from 08:30 -> 16:00, 5 days a week, and get 2000:- a month for doing it (not that great, but since i would be doing it at home anyway, it's perfect.. =)) hehe it's a EU-project in sweden =) oh yes! you are swedish... tell us about sweden and its scene <^flex^> Well, the swedish scene is "afraid" of alcohol, which isn't really my style.. and alot of people are too unserious, they come to a party just to release crap productions that are never ment to really compete.. But the serious groups in sweden i think are heading really high... watch out, dear finns.. =) haha... what about the background? can you tell us about the background of the swedish scene, along with yours since your at it *** Mr has joined #demojournal flex: its ur interview! kick the intruders if you want! :D *** Mr has left #demojournal [ed: that was fun!] <^flex^> Well, i didn't start releasing stuff until oh, 1996 i think, but i was very interested in the scene before that.. We all remember Cascada for example.. they're somewhat the backbone of the swedish scene i think.. I (like many others) got the urge to start coding effects for real after i saw Second reality back in 93. (although i didn't see it until 94, on my friends deadly quich 386.. =)) naa, they can watch.,as long as they shuttup =) ick! another case of "i saw 2nd reality and wanted to do that!" ? <^flex^> hehe yup =) i still think it's a great demo.. no amiga days for you then? <^flex^> no, i have never owned an amiga, but i had my very first coding-attempts on a vic20.. vic20? whats that? <^flex^> we actually just had a discussion about doing Second reality in 64kb.. the tiny little computah that came before the c-64 oh, 20 years ago.. =) humm... dont know "my tiny computah" history :( oh well... back to nowdays... what have you released? <^flex^> hmm i've released a few demos and a few intros... dunno how many right now.. =) take your time to count... =) <^flex^> 3-4 intros at least i think.. i have 13 directories in my c:\develop\demo\projects\ anyway. =) seems to be accurate. am i supposed to know these things? poor orange & tpolm. =) * ^flex^ lights a cigarette.. haha dont u know those things can kill ya? (cigars i mean) <^flex^> i'm thinking about getting a beer too.. i have a few now after the party.. =) ok... oh yeah... u went to the party 8! tell us about the enviroment <^flex^> "who want's to live forever". (with powerful background-music) =) hehe <^flex^> tp this year was really neat.. since i had my demo done prior to the party, i could spend more time boozing and meeting people (instead of sitting coding all the time). The best part i think was when Poison/Inf got back from the hospital.. he got so damn drunk the cops fetched him and put him in the hospital over night.. that's what i call party spirit. =) But i really hate the party organizers, it's the second year in a row (damn it's hard typing with this cigarette =)), that they've screwed up our contribution.. Last year they -forgot- to show our intro, so half the audience had left by the time it started.. and this year they showed our demo with lousy sound (more like random noise) in just the right speaker at 50% the volume.. =( and what place did you get with that? <^flex^> that's why the demo placed 16 out of 20 =( which in my opinion isn't giving the demo justice..) i was aiming at like.. 5-6'th or so.. i agree with you on that! but ofcourse i like 80% of the demos i see so... :P <^flex^> hehe most demos are great, as long as they are serious.. and what about the top ones? care to say a few words about them? <^flex^> i personally don't think the winning demo should win... sure it was very fun and great code, but it's not a winning type demo.. Bombs State of mind on the other hand is very damn nice.. great code and great music.. And i also think Inf's Yume2 should have gotten a more fair treatment than 4th. I -love- that tune (Aikawa Nanase) i still cant see inf's :( <^flex^> mp3 tracks are the wave of the future.. we're having mp3 music on our tg-demo for example.. well, kravitz is working on a final now... should be available soon [ed: i can't wait!!!] what about blasphemy+purple? what do you think of it? <^flex^> i was abit dissapointed about blasphemy/purple's demo.. When i first heard that they were doing a coop, i though something like "Plastik + Lois Lane = powah!", but it wasn't near my expectations.. but it's still a good demo.. why mp3? <^flex^> mp3 lets the musicians deal with midi for example.. they don't have to think about size in the same way, and (best of all) mp3 allows vocals!.. vocals are imo the thing that's missing in most demos. <^flex^> it's alittle too much to have commercial music as demo-tracks though.. I don't think anyone dissagrees that bombs and infs demos have the best music in a demo ever.. even if they are commercial tracks.. humm... yeah... vocals can grab attention indeed what are your favorite scene coders/gfx/musicians? <^flex^> My favourite coder has to be Statix.. i just can't grasp that guys enormous brain! =) haha <^flex^> Best graphician i think is Made or Sunday... Sunday has a really great style and he doesn't repaint scans... Oh, and i must say a few words about our graphician, NamNam... He is very talented and he -never- repaints pics or scans.. He does everything either straight from his head or from some kind of picture he has seen... If he would redraw a scan, he would most probably be around the best gfx dudes around.. It's nothing i encourage him to do though, since it's -abit- lame.. i really enjoy Mufflers music right now.. And Balrog has nice variations in his tunes.. balrog never makes 2 mods sound the same... i seen some of his pics on blocc's demos.. superfish had some nice manga-style girls. was that him? or baloo? <^flex^> no, that was NamNam.. a few words about planet superfish.. That demo isn't really anything i'm proud over.. it's way to messy.. but the noizy 3d-wireobject is cool =) yeah... u seem to like balrog... how many co-op's have you done with him? 2? u dont have much pride on your stuff do you? <^flex^> hmm I've made one demo together with Balrog i think.. (w8 have to chech to be sure =)) i think 2! <^flex^> no, w8 2 demos with balrog. =) na, i've never done anything that i can say; "ah, this is me, and i can't do anything better"... i always do too short demos too, imo.. humm... ur still after your second reality... :) <^flex^> hehe yeah.. i have this dream to like.. win assembly with 100% of the votes. =) (what coder doesn't? =)) hahaha i would be happy to just get a big-demo out! :D anyways... more questions... <^flex^> just get to it. =) *** altemarq has joined #demojournal FLEX AR NAKEN [ed: what the?!?] *** altemarq has left #demojournal time for demojournal "youll never guess it top-quizz" 1) what does FLEX AR NAKEN mean? [ed: yeah...] <^flex^> i really have no idea.. [ed: that bad, hei?] 2) whats the capital of madagascar? <^flex^> can u wait a few minutes on that one? =) w8, isn't madagascar an island belonging to another country? no. its independent... and its a damn big island!!! <^flex^> like.. it doesn't have a capital? =) ok, darn. =) hehehe that much i know. =) 3) what's the medium rain/cm3 per year on sweden? <^flex^> hmm i would say around 20cm or so... maybe it's more, i hate the swedish weather. =) hmm that doesn't sound alot, does it? maybe 200cm? haha =) er... no it doesnt... no wait... i got it wrong! [ed: stupid!] *** whzGARLIC has joined #demojournal *** whzGARLIC has left #demojournal [ed: what is this? open season?] its cc's per cm^3 anyways... <^flex^> hmm yeah, then 20cm sounds reasonable. =) 4) whats the flying speed of a seagull? <^flex^> depends on if it's an african or european seagull. 5) if a plane with english and french passengers crashes on the swiss/germany frontier, where are the survivors burried? flex: hei! u seen monthy pythons!!!! :P [editor: i think in the movie it was not about seagull's but some other bird... never the less, nice one flex!] <^flex^> bury the survivors? sounds abit nasty.. =) of course you realize i must kill you now dont you? :P <^flex^> no! no! i have a wife and kids! u do? :P you have a family picture to prove that? <^flex^> hmm no.. that was just a defense mechanism. =) hehe what about your real life? no luck with the opposite sex? :( <^flex^> naa, i'm actually blessed with a great exterior... =) i don't have problems getting girls, to be honest.. [editor: and you expect us to believe that? ;)] seeing anyone right now? <^flex^> that doesn't sound right, but it's true.. haha =) <^flex^> yeah, but she's ILL!.. it's called kartel-feber in swedish.. so i can't see her for like.. 3 weeks or so, and she can't drink any alcohol in 6 months. =) :( too bad [ed: the alcohol part of course! ;)] <^flex^> yeah =) i think im running out of questions care to say hello to someone? <^flex^> Are these questions made out for you, or are you figuring them out as you go along? =) "running out of questions"- sounds like you reached the end of the paper or something. =) no no... but i have done so many interviews i already know the typical questions <^flex^> hehe ok =) thee greetings then: its always... who are you, what u done lately, what do you like doing, what u plan to do for the future, thats nice... care to say grtx? [ed: yeah... me too! (?)] <^flex^> I'd like to say hi to all the serious scene-people out there, "keep up da great work, lads!". And to all my non-scene friends.. (Happy 20th birthday Martin..).. Oh, and ofcourse my friends in the scene... And all the girls i know and will get to know in the future aswell.. =) hehe <^flex^> Lets make the scene come alive for real the next millenium.. =) care to say anything else? any free advertisement and stuff? <^flex^> Hm... Drink more alcohol! It feeds the cortex with needed basic stuff for wonderful demo-ideas! haha! is beer better than vodka or not? <^flex^> i'm not so keen on vodka.. but i'd rather drink a bottle of tequilla than 20 beers! tequilla rules.. ok... i guess this is it leave some url's or email or smtg so ppl can get in touch <^flex^> i think this is to long for any normal person to read already. =) yeah, my email addy is mjflex@hotmail.com... that's about it i guess.. gonna put up some blocc homepage someday too.. www.blocc.gov or something =) haha ok! :) thx for your time! :) <^flex^> great.. no prob.. ! Session Close: Wed Jan 06 05:07:26 1999 =====! demo !================================================================== 2 by Eastgate (final-version) Found on www.hornet.org. (Hornet is still up and www.scene.org is down... It's a conspiracy!) 1st place at Scene Strike 3. System requirements: 5 MB HD, "some memory"... recommended: VESA2 (8-bit mode available according .nfo-file), pentium 166 The demo: It starts with a colorfull plasma-like thingy, then "Eastgate" is shown using little blue lights, like some adverts at the street. A girl-face picture is shown, with some water-effect over it (lots of water in this demo). Thereafter, lots of 3D-objects kick in. Spikeballs (you know, a ball with 6 points), spikes (a spikeball without the ball) in water, a cloud of asteroids, ... These are all quite simple objects, apparently their 3d-engine can't handle the +10000 face-objects we are used to see in today's demos. Something original: some golden frames, forming a tunnel, with two strange-looking spikeballs in it. It took me a while to figure it out, but these are glass-objects, not just glenz as in the old days, but really refracting the light in it (like a lens-effect). Also a very nice tunnel, a bit twisted at the edges, is shown during the greetings. The music is something electronic, but also relaxed. It fits the demo but gets a bit repetitive at the end. There are some hand-drawn gfx of Ilke/plasmaters, an Amiga-graphician, but no compressed video as in "Anger" (I liked those short clips). Although there are few repeating parts, I think '2' is a bit short for a 5-meg demo. Using pkzip, I get a 2-meg zipfile. Maybe they need to use some compression on there library. And I really hate it when demos repeat the end until you press ESC. Can't you just crash to DOS/Win/Linux/... ? Psychic Symphony recommended me this one, and I really liked it. Give it a try. [ed: I did? Oh yeah... so i did!] Seven =====! intro !================================================================= ********** * STRIKE * ********** It's very simple: If no one sends me some mod'o'week i cannot keep up with this corner. It has been sufficently proven that i cannot review intros, for several reasons: 1) i do not know asm so i can not keep up with size-coding abilities. 2) i dont have GUS so i cannot hear any sound on most of the intros. 3) people don't like my intro reviews. I am asking you to please send your text. Please do not review your own intros but someone elses you may have liked or have been asked to review. It is not that hard! If i don't get any text's i WILL close this corner simply enough! No matter what people will say! I do admire what people do with only 64k, but we have another example, the gfx of the week! I also am very fond of viewing others gfx still i do not have a gfx'o'week corner. Why? Because i cannot do a proper review of the pictures and those who DO can, do not want to write. One more time, i plea for your help! Psychic Symphony =====! mod !=================================================================== OK! This week i have something different. Hope you don't hate it! I asked for the mailing list, i gave the names off the hotmail account to the mantainer so he could subscribe everyone in one full scoop! I did it because: 1) i want my mouse button to live! 2) I don't want to get tendinites just for releasing a newsletter! 3) I got several people complaining that hotmail attachments always ended up corrupted or ueencoded. I apologize to everyone for not warning properly everyone of this mailing-list. I reckonned people would realize that when they seen the reply of someone posted twice and be smart enough to ignore the messages. Instead they just complained about getting more mails which generated more mails and more replys and the rest is history. Anyways... Let me get this article about mailing lists right so that there are no more doubts about how it works. Recall that i don't know much on it aswell. In fact, i would like to encourage someone to write about them to some diskmag! Anyways... What is a mailing list? Well... It's very simple. It's a mailing system that forwards the message you have sent to all the people who are subscribed to that list! Moving on... You have a mailing list on a certain domain... For demoj it was chosen to be scene-hu.com! All mailing lists on this domain are "updated" by the majordomo so that if you want any information about any mailing list on this domain you get it through majordomo@scene-hu.com. But how does majordomo work? You write your command on the BODY of the message! It is important that you do not write it on the subject or majordomo won't recognize it!!! Examples: subscribe demoj
