032mIn the 90s, I never once paid to use the internet. It was just too easy
136m
032mto get around it. And the best part, me, along with people I knew, we were
136m
032mteenagers. Its formulaic really: teenagers break rules and laws.
136m Before I had a drivers license I was running an illegal scheme with an 800
dial-up ISP called cris.com.

33mHeres how it went:
32m Somewhere through the underground grapevine, word got out about dial-up
1-800 service from an ISP company called cris.com. Because the internet was
realitivly new to the masses, things like automatic credit card verification
werent high on the list of priorities for smaller businesses. Smaller busi-
nesses like the folks at cris.com. At first, you could just call up their
customer service number, say a few buzz words, fill in billing information
with random numbers, and ding! you had an internet account.
So while everyone else was thinking they were on top of the technology game
with their precious AOL, next to us, they looked like a bunch of pre-wheel
neanderthals pushing around cumbersome stone blocks.
Their online community was barely a smoldering heap of twigs that would
spark from time to time. Meanwhile, underground, we were igniting beacons
that would connect us from all over the globe.
We broke laws that prohibted us from communicating. Yoink. Just like that.
We sometimes broke laws to keep channels of this creativity open.
Theres a difference between breaking laws then and breaking laws now.
37m
32mBreaking laws then was almost an artform in itself.
136m
37mWE told the internet what to do back then. Now its the other way around.
