for start, lets talk about, what made bbses, back in the days famous or
even necessary. the most important reason, was that there was no
internet! dahhh... obvious you will say. yes, but not in the way you
think. computer users wanted to communicate with other users and exchange
files. thats the main reason that bbses existed and even the reason why
the internet created. the need for data exchange and communication.
today we dont need or use bbses cause everyone can freely connect to the
internet, download very big files, stream video, speak via voip etc. you
can do a lot more than in a bbs and with an extreme bandwidth. so why the
heck someone should use a bbs, except the retro filling of the thing etc.
because... as they say... the devil hides in the details... and the
word freely is the key! we can obvious see today, that our
communication via computers is tracked, in every way. search engines
track you, sites are tracking you, they install cookies and force you to
accept them, our smartphones are being tracked, even with out our
knowledge and consent, our credit cards are being tracked, always for
advertisement reasons etc.
in a bbs, you dont have any of these things. no one is recording nothing
about you. you can even login with a fake id, download anything you want
and leave. bbses always provided a way of 100 free communication without
big companies or organizations acting as middle-men, watching you. if a
bbs uses a secure type of connection like ssh, then its the perfect mean
to absolute free express your self. also, we know from the past, that
bbses was a good way to exchange illegal material like files/programs. we
can obviously see, that in the internet today, companies are pursuing
users for using or getting illegal material like programs, movies, songs
etc. even the forgotten rom files have re-emerged and companies like
nintendo are shutting down sites that shared that kind of content.
so, in my opinion, bbses have the opportunity to gain some ground, from
the internet, by offering what always they offered, which is free speech
and free files : for sure not everyone will leave the internet and
return to bbses. only a few will do it, but they will do it consciously
by choice, because they just want to be free and not being tracked and
harassed by big companies. a bbs with secure connection and encryption in
every possible way/level, in the near future, will be the last place to
talk free in the net. not in irc, not in facebook, not in the dark web.
whats your opinion about this? do you think that people will leave
mainstream internet services and return to bbses? do you think that
more and more bbses will be used as an alternative way for free speech?
