Author : Road Rebel
Subject : Introduction to RCN 21
I am writing this to say a few words about RCN and how people treat
us. First of all, when you see an article that rips on someone or a
group, and you dont like it. Take it up with the author!!! If it
isnt written by Rebel Chicken, Hitex or I then dont nag us about it!
Also, if you have a problem with something written about you or a group,
WRITE A REBUTTLE! Dont sit there and bitch at us in the channel, it
doesnt do shit. I came to RCN today, and all I heard was bitching
because someone said something mean about a group. WELL, if you are a
group member and your group gets made fun of, take it on the chin, be a
man. We have and will make fun of A LOT of people, most of it is just
FUN and in MAD RCN, and people realize this and get over it. If you
come in and bitch at us, it makes us want to rip you some more. Ok
enough of this.
Now, this is for the people that come in and say SEND ME THE NEWEST
RCN! You dont have to beg!!!! Before you nag people for it try this.
Look in the channel for someone named *dcc anythingdcc. If they exist
type this : /MSG nick xdcc list If they list that they have it type
this : /MSG nick xdcc send pack@
OK!! NOW, if there isnt a DCC in the channel look at the topic.
It will usually have an FTP or Web page adrress! If they arent there,
then ask. Please dont just come in and BEG. It is very unbecoming.
Also, for people that want to write for RCN, you dont have to ask
for an RCN app. Just write something and send it to me. If it is good
we use it, if not, well.. we dont. However, our editors are very
patient and they will try to unscramble any submission, regardless of
your English skills. Also, we readily accept submissions written in
French, Hebrew, Spanish, or Swedish. Dont worry, well get it
translated! Of course, we still prefer English! If you can keep
submitting to RCN you will become a member. But dont ask what the
topic should be, if we had all the topics we could write the whole
magazine, the topics are the hard part!

Dear RCN,
Ive been around for nearly three years now. No, I have never been
elite k-rad kick-ass d00d, but I did run a small warez board for
around 2 years. I recently closed it so I could play games har har
har. The only good games Ive played recently are of course, games
like Duke3D, Quake, etc. But my best memories are with those games from
93 and such.
What is it with game programmers, these days? They seem to enjoy
taking a camera, walking down the block, burning the film on a CD,
adding a keyboard handler, package. Oh sure, I would probably do the
same thing if I wanted to make money.
And thats what you get: 50, 60 even over 70 disks. Most of the
time, and Im sure a lot of you will agree on this, theres no more than
2 disks of actual programming/playable shit.
Really, the size is relevant of only one factor. How good is the
intro? How many times did you start a game, look at the intro for about
5 minutes while drooling all over your crotch to find out the game is a
VGA, 16 color piece of junk?

Dear Xenon,
Well, Xenon! How are you? Ive been trying to reach you, but it
seems you are quite a busy dude. So, I took the liberty to write in RCN
so that everyone may share the common good of knowledge. As people may
well know, I am a currently a writer for RCN. However, I am also a
coder. It has taken me quite some time about 1 and a half years to
perfect some coding that is similar to Xenons code. I do not steal
your code, how would I? but I have created my own. Anyways, I have a
smooth scroller just like yours, etc. Basically, I can dish out
whatever you can except you do this RCN stuff in C++/ASM/Pascal and I
only code in pascal/ASM so far yet.
I am not writing this to brag. I am writing this to find out how on
Earth do you keep your code clean, organized and functioning??? I
imagine with all these menus, text files, it is a bitch. I know how to
make menus and scroll text files, and to tell you the truth, lightbar
menus the ones you have take me quite some time to make and the text
files take time to organize and to display in b800. After all, my code
isnt optimized, but it takes me a while to make and it is fairly a good
size. I am confused. Please share how you keep all this organized.
And one more thing, please, tell me how to display a VGA screen a
picture like the one ending RCN AND keeping the picture data inside the
code. No, I do NOT want to attach the picture data to the end of the
exe but if that is the only way, tell me. Again, thanks for the help
and thanks for inspiring me to become a coder.

Dear RCN,
Just thought Id write you guys to express a few of my opinions.
First, your mag rocks! The music, code, the interface, theyre the
best, but over the last few issues, RCN seems to be taking me longer,
and longer to read. I found myself unzipping the file at 10:30 PM
tonight, and when I finihed reading the mag, it was 11:41 PM. What Im
trying to say is maybe you should go more for quality rather than
quantity. I find a lot of your group interviews are more or less the
same in content, and Ill probably be skipping most of them in the
future.
Next, that fucking space invaders game. I spent 10 minutes playing
it, and got 3000 points and I said screw this. You really want me to
play for half an hour to get to 10000 points!? Hehe, I guess Ill just
have to try and live without knowing whats in those secret articles, or
maybe someone will release another space invaders crack :-.
Last, what ever happened to Defacto? It seems they couldnt handle
the pressure, or are they STILL waiting on this miracle interface? Id
say its probably the first option!
Okay well thats about all from me, keep up the good work, and death
to all IRCOPS!!

Dear Darkman,
We dont expect everybody to read the entire mag, just read the
parts that most interest you, and you will have a much more enjoyable
experience. We understand that we cant please everybody, but in trying
to do so, there will always be something that others dont like. So
read what interests you, theres a ton of stuff in the mag, read what
youre most interested in, and then, print out the entire mag and read
the parts that dont interest you as much while sitting on the toilet
taking a shit. As for Defacto, they just released their Goodbye
Defacto issue, so I guess its another one gone down the drain. Oh
well.

Dear RCN,
Hi, my name is Eraser. Most of you people dont know me, probably
because I changed my nick and I am not in any groups anymore. I am
writing an article about what odogg2 wrote about. IRC ops and their
power. Personally, I have talked to a couple IRC ops that were kewl,
but some are just assholes, because they can play god on IRC. Prae,
kern.coms owner has been an IRC op for 15 years. Dont ya think he
should find something else to do besides playing on IRC for 15 years?
Anyways, the other day I loaded LL link looker, which is the best tool
you can get publicly, and its the best tool to get unless youre an IRC
op. I had it loaded on kern.com, then it quit and I got klined.
5 minutes later, I was not klined anymore for some reason so I asked
Prae. His response? Link lookers are lame. Well, I dont give a fuck
if theyre lame! Its all I got, you stupid faggot. I dont invest my
life savings into fucking kern.com so I can play IRC ops with the other
big boys. Like odogg2 wrote, an IRC op has use for /kill, and he has
use for his 9 clones. I have use for my clones and LL. To this day,
Prae is still being a prick. 15 years of o-lines makes you a dipshit.
Too bad.

Dear Waynekerr,
Waynekerr, I thought your info in RCN 19 on FTPing was VERY
interesting and helpful. With the CHMOD 777 command it turns everything
on writeable, readable, etc. Is there a way to turn just each one on?
Also, is there a way to turn them off writeable in particular?? These
commands will be VERY helpful in my maintaining an ftp site a
borrowed one, if you will. Also, these commands will keep lamers
from deleting filez :. Thanks a BUNCH for any help, and be sure to

Dear Anonymous,
At your UNIX prompt type man chmod -- that will load up the manual
to the CHMOD command. There are too many options to list and it would
be much better for your comprehension of the chmod program to load up
the manual for it. By the way, the man command can be initiated on
any other command to get information about it. Hmm... wonder if you can
do man man! Off to check...

Dear RCN,
When sysops join groups and want there board to be a distro/HQ and
they dont have telnet, what does that mean then? Basically all it
means is that you get access to the FTP sites and have ops in the
channel. Why dont bigger groups have more long distance couriers to
support the boards or have a few local members because being a boards
distro really doesnt mean as much like in the long distance days.
Before many new lame groups pop up everyday and die out, the bigger
more powerful groups used to support the system. I dont mean they have
to upload 300 megs a week long distance but 50 megs or more would be
nice, just to show you care. Releasing groups should just make it a
policy to upload there releases to the member boards and HQs. Yea, I
know it is a bitch to upload to all boards thats why better standards
should be maintained by groups so even though more people will be upset
that they cant get in that is just to bad. Because a group can have
everyone anyway so cut the slackers and lame boards out to make some
room and some more time for the more elite ones.
The reason I am writing this is not to complain that much because I
am very much enjoying the scene and that is why I am here so long but to
get this idea out because I know many sysops that I deal with feel the
same way but dont know where to go to have this expressed where people
will actually read it. But I know where to go RCN because anyone who is
anyone in the scene and can read will grab RCN so my view will finally
be expressed.

Dear RCN,
It has been called to my attention, that the local boards that I
used to call were going under. I know most of this it true due to the
fact that we now have 3 Internet service providers in our area local to
everyone. I was told that before the Internet came around there were 30
boards local where I live. Now there are 5.
All the boards died within one year of when the Internet came to my
town. Now, I know for some people that they used to like calling local
boards and playing Legend of the Red Dragon and other games like that
but now its to the point it you want to have a decent board you need to
run it on the Internet to get calls.
I predict by the year 2000 the way it is going now there will be
very FEW local boards in your area, like I know mine. I used to run
one. I took it down and now am setup for the Internet I just need my
static IP connection. And I am off on my journey to the great beyond of
the Internet. And what do most people want when they telnet to a board?
Warez mostly. I dont know too many people who dont run a board and
dont have them. Its just an everyday occurrence now.
With the major groups like DOD Drink or Die and PWA Pirates with
Attitudes releasing the AWSOME software they get, its just too big.
But if you want to run a thriving board, you need a few things.
Internet, Warez, people who call, and cool ansis from ACiD Ansi

Your Space Invaders game is the best. I play it when Im bored.
RCN also gives me information on the warez scene and cool music. I hope

great.
The question I was asking, was how do you make the smooth scrolling
effect in RCN? I dont want to know exactly just the method. My other
question is, that japanese stuff that starts on RCN. What does it mean
and where did it come from?

Dear RCN,
Ive gotta say your mag is awesome. Especially at the beginning.
The art is awesome too! One of the little things your mag has that
others dont is smooth scrolling with keys. Other mags have the
crappiest scrolling. Your musical variety is also great and smooth! I
like the space game the way it is, too. I dont want to piss anyone off
but they shouldnt come whining in the channel when they cant get
10,000 points. Its not THAT hard, just try it for at least 5 minutes
and youll be surprised at how good you can be!
I was reading Issue 20 about getting sodas from Coke machines for
free. One of them said to get a train schedule and put those nickles
down on the tracks so they get smashed and turn into quarters. Just a
few years back I did something similar, but this didnt require a train
grin. Just get a heavy hammer and take a handfull of nickles out to a
hard flat surface like a sidewalk. Just hammer them away! It might
take you a while at first but once you get the hang of it it gets real
easy. You might want a real quarter handy, though. They also work at
the arcades. Well theres my smashed up 5 cents!
*PS* Keep up the amazing work with the mag, and a big wahzup to

Dear RCN,
There is something new I noticed Napalm do. They release the game,
and with it all kinds of addons. Cinema addons, speech addons, and so
on. I think this is a great idea, and I hope to see all groups start
doing this. This lets me check the game first, and if I really like it,
I take all the addons and burn them on a CD. Then, I almost have the
original CD! For example, why couldnt RazorCD release their new
Baseball game in 2 parts? One for the game itself and one for the
cinema addon. That way they wouldnt have passed the 40 disk limit, and
you wouldnt have to download a 58 disk release just to find out the
game doesnt work. By the way, GREAT MAGAZINE! Keep it up.
Signed,
God-Ion
Dear God-Ion,
The flispide of that is that now group will take it upon themselves
to release 40 disk releases that have no video and no sound in them.
Nobody wants to waste their time downloading something just to play it
without any sound for 40 disks. Old 5-disk releases could come with
awesome sound, theres no reason to have to slack off now.

thing you have going here. I hope and have a good feeling that people

found your mag. Im from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Internet services
here are still a bit lame, so I dont show up much in the scene, as
you name it. But today I went to M8leech and download the Issue 20 of
RCN. Great coding, great sound, awful colors :. The game could be a
little more difficult. Its not hard to get 10k points. Well, thats
it for now! Keep up the good work!

Dear RCN,
Your e-mag is the best ever! Ive been keeping up with RCN all the

Reporter : Rebel Chicken Interviewee : Rom Racer
Subject : Razor 666? Affiliation : RZR Coordinator
: Razor 1911 has been one of the top groups in the scene for many
years now, and many would consider it the best group of all time,
however, there are some that would say that Razor 1911 is a dying
group, and that Prestige is the new king of the hill, do you
believe that is true?
: I would not say that Razor 1911 is dying, perhaps we are not in
our prime. But, we are certainly still alive.
: Do you believe that Prestige has taken Razor 1911s place in the
games scene as the 1 group? Razor 1911 has definitely not
released as MANY games as Prestige, but the games that Razor 1911
has released, such as WarCraft 2 14 Disks with the Expansion
Set, are usually better cracked and have a high chance of
working. Do you believe that Prestige releases also have a high
rate of working?
: Razor 1911 has been known for many years to release quality
working titles. Now, all groups come and go, but Razor 1911 will
always be around. Prestige does not have the same long term
reputation as Razor 1911 does. I cannot say how long Prestige
will be able to continue with their high volume of releases, in
most cases equal to Razor 1911 standards. Then again, Prestige
has messed up a few recently, but that is expected from a new
group.
: What are these mess ups by Prestige that could have come about
because of their young age?
: For example, Prestiges release of Frank Thomas Baseball did not
allow pitching. Miscellaneous bugs as such in their releases,
which can really happen to anyone, unless you have the
organization and experience to have things tested properly, are
not necessarily due to their young age. But because of their
young age, they most likely havent had the time to setup a
clockwork-like system of getting their releases out smoothly.
: What is this clockwork-like system that you are describing? And
how can other games groups learn from Razor 1911s experience?
: Well for example, Razor 1911 has a good reputation for releases
working properly that are properly cracked. However certain
groups in some cases based out of 718, do not have such a good
reputation for things working properly, I am sure if the group in
question I would rather not mention any names at this point,
would schedule in the time to test a release to make sure that the
crack is fully working, a lot of problems could have been avoided.
There is really nothing to be learned from Razor 1911s
experience. Experience itself is the key.
: A good release is guaranteed to be spread to many people, but even
Razor 1911 has to release some games here and there that are just
not fun. Its not Razor 1911s fault, its just that some
companies cant program fun games. And when that happens, how
does the courier section of Razor 1911 help spread its releases to
the masses even when the game just does not want to spread?
: Obviously in a games group situation, priority goes to the boards.
Once a release has been put on our HQ boards, we then take it over
to the Internet by procedure. Once a release is on all of the
main distribution points, there is really nothing we can do to
force the end user to download it. It is not our responsibility
to market it.
: How do you take it over to the Internet by procedure? What do you
mean by procedure? Also, what are the requirements for a board
that wants to become affiliated with Razor 1911. And when a board
does become affiliated, how does one become more than a member
board to become a HQ board?
: By procedure, I mean it is how things are normally done, sort of
by the book. The requirements of a board that would like to
become a part of Razor 1911 are normally evaluated on an
individual basis. We look for boards in which the sysop is able
to actively contribute to the group. Generally, I would assume, I
have not been in Razor 1911 at the time an HQ board was appointed,
that a HQ board would be selected on the basis of hardware, nodes,
traffic, and of course the sysops level of contribution.
: On the note of experience that you mentioned earlier, what
surprises me is that many of the Prestige leaders such as The
Renegade Chemist and Zeus, were former leaders of Razor 1911
during its peak. Why wouldnt they be showing the experience that
they have acquired over the years in making sure that Prestige
releases work in a more timely fashion?
: In a new group environment, having established people, such as The
Renegade Chemist and Zeus is always a plus, but it cannot totally
evade the problems which arise in a new group. You must keep in
mind that a group is a group, a team effort I should say. You
cannot base a group on the merits of a few strong individuals.
: I do find it interesting that many Razor 1911 couriers are also
couriers in Rapier. Why is that so? Is Rapier official couriers
for Razor 1911? For example, on Street Spyders, the Razor 1911
WHQ which also happens to be one of the fastest boards in the
world, most of the top uploaders are usually members of Rapier and
Razor 1911. Perhaps there is a team effort here?
: It is purely coincidence that many Rapier couriers are also Razor
1911 couriers. Both Rapier and Razor 1911 only take the best,
therefore, it is likely that both groups will have a similar
member base. It also happens to be that Street Spyders is the
Rapier US HQ and also being the Razor WHQ. Rapier obviously wants
the best boards, and so does Razor 1911, therefore it is likely
that their choices would overlap.
: I heard rumors that Rapier might have disbanded earlier this week,
or that perhaps many Rapier members left Rapier for Everlast
because you did not have enough time to run the group, is there
any truth to that? Is Rapier still alive?
: I cannot comment on Rapiers current status.
: Ever since my friends brought me into the scene, Ive always asked
myself, What does the 1911 in Razor 1911 mean? Nobody has ever
been able to tell me, but I do hope that you will be able to
answer that question. And please do, or I will have to kill you.
: 777h.
: 777h? What does that mean? I will kill you if you dont tell me.
Is 1911 some kind of Satanic thing? Like, you take 1911 and you
some how rearrange the numbers, and then you multiply and subtract
them in some strange fashion, and you get 666? Like that Ozzy
Osbourne music video, where his forehead has a 9454 print, and
its actually some sort of allusion to the printmark of the Beast
Anti-Christ found in the Bible? See, I was bored, so I tossed
9454 in my head, and if you multiply 9 times 4, you get 36. Now
if you add 5 plus 4, you get 9, so now youre left with 369. So
if you take 3 from 9 and add that 3 to the first 3, you get 666.
This can be confusing, but you get the point.
: I suppose we will leave that as a mystery.
: Bummer. Oh well, you cant win them all.

Reporter : Rebel Chicken Interviewee : Bug Lord Morphine
Subject : Napalm Cheats Again? Affiliation : Epic Leaders
: What kind of group is Epic? Its fairly new, but Ive seen its
releases around many fast sites this past week. How did Epic
start?
: Well, its a games releasing group. It was started when Morphine
and I decided that when we were in ROR Release on Rampage, our
work was being wasted. Morphines supplies were being done by
Prestige first, and my couriering was pointless for a release
group that did only did 1 game each month.
: What did you mean when you said that Morphines supplies were
being done by Prestige first? Was Morphine part of Prestige? I
thought you said that both of you were members of ROR?
: No, well all of the releases I obtained took ROR too long to get
out and they never got the releases it out it was getting on my
nerves so we decided to start up Epic so that we could make sure
that that crap didnt happen to me and other suppliers. I dont
want to sound like Im dissing ROR, but the records do show that
ROR released very FEW games.
: Morphine, when you supplied for ROR, why did it take them so long
to release something? Were they busy checking to make sure that
the game was fully cracked and working? If so, then RORs
precaution would actually be good for the scene.
: Well, it just seemed that the people that they needed were never
around to do their job to get the releases out.
: In a way then, Epic is a split off of ROR? Now that Epic is here,
what distinguishes it from other release groups? What makes it
special? Why is it not just ANOTHER lame one week games group?
: Well, only the leadership of Epic split off of ROR, and even then
we dont think of it like that. ROR was simply the group that
both Morphine and I were in at one point in time. We dont really
consider ourselves special, we just get the job done and will
continue to do so. You should also know that Morphine and I were
away from the scene for a while before this, so we were only in
ROR a few weeks. Im not saying that ROR is bad, but we really
dont have anything to do with them anymore.
: Specify what you meant when you said, We dont really consider
ourselves special, we just get the job done and will continue to
do so. What are you guys doing that you will contine to do, but
that does not make Epic special?
: Well, Epic is no different than any other games group which has
succeeded except that we are doing so in a smaller scale. We get
our releases and we get them cracked and we get them out to the
sites. Thats how the scene is, you dont need to be special to
do that, you just need to be organized.
: While running Epic, have you encountered any problems? I have
heard rumors that the release of Gender Wars was supposed to be
released by Epic, but the release was then stolen by Prophet, the
leader of Napalm, is that true?
: Well, we like to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, and if
Prophet did it by accident, then we can forgive that, but there is
a little bit of doubt. We had placed our release on the Internet
shell account of X-Factor, a Legion leader, while waiting for a
cracker to get it. It seems that somehow Dark Force found the
release on the shell its also a Legion release site, and gave
it to Prophet. Prophet then uploaded it to Pentium Domination.
It could be an innocent mistake. We also got conflicting answers
by Prophet when he was questioned, and he never did admit to it.
But tracing the path of the spread clearly leads back to Pentium
Domination where it was uploaded by Prophet. We missed the final
release of Gender Wars to Razor 1911 by only a few minutes, and if
now for this extreme distraction we would probably have had the
release.
: You lost the release to Razor 1911? Did Napalm actually ever
release the Gender Wars stolen from Epic? Prophet is known for
stealing cracks and releases from other games groups, but did he
actually do anything with the stolen release this time?
: No, which points to the fact that it could have been an accident,
and they didnt know it was uncracked. However, there is always
the possibility that Napalm WAS cracking the Epic release and
simply didnt do it in time. The conflicting answers from Prophet
dont make it seem any more likely to be the first.
: On the note of another release, NHL PowerPlay, which was released
by Coredump, but unfortunately, the game was knowingly released
without a crack. I later noticed that Epic released NHL PowerPlay
as well, is the Epic version any different from Coredumps
careless release, or was the Epic release of NHL PowerPlay also
uncracked?
: No, it was not a dupe. It was one of the best possible releases
for a new group such as Epic. Coredump knowing that it was not
cracked, released it uncracked, and it was nuked everywhere, which
led to the humiliating fact that many members of Coredump started
denying the fact that they were even in the group. Razor 1911
declared that the game was uncrackable, and Holy Beast from
Prestige tried to crack it but failed. However, Misha, the god of
cracking, cracked the game for Epic. To help out the people who
cant follow directions from the NFO, you must do a CUSTOM install
and then you must do a select all. That should keep the channel
Epic free from being flooded by lamers, wait, calling stupid
people lamers is politically incorrect, I actually meant people
with low intelligence or rather, the installationally
challenged.
: Has Coredump shown any resentment toward Epic? After all, Epic
did make Coredump look really lame. Yes, and I do call them lame.
I dont like being politically correct, so sue me.
: Well, Incarnate and Perfect Form have been the only ones to give
us any problems. They tried to get NHL PowerPlay cracked like 5
days after we released our working version, but they still
couldnt get it cracked so they got really mad and started telling
every one how the Epic version of NHL PowerPlay didnt even work
when everyone who downloaded it would know that it does work. I
think that most Epic members are still banned from channel CD
Coredumps IRC channel, and a few of Coredump members did try to
infiltrate Epic, rather pathetically too since we knew that the
Coredump spies were discussing tricking Epic. I believe there
were a couple threats, and tKLP informed us that Incarnate was
trying to steal our crack for their release.
: What do you mean when you said, A few of their members tried to
infiltrate us?
: Someone named Pioneer tried a I really hate Coredump, I want to
join Epic, but we have our own spies in channel CD and we were
totally aware of their pathetic attempts at infiltrating Epic.
Some other members of Coredump tried as well, but Pioneer was
their best actor.
: Dam, with spies and all, Im surprised theyre not Communist or
something. They do the stupidest things, they HAVE to be
Communist, it just doesnt make sense. Anyway, what are your
future plans for Epic? If bigger games groups such as Prestige or
Razor 1911 asked you to have Epic merge into them, would you agree
to it?
: Actually a group called Precision asked us to merge into them
about 2 days ago but we were NOT interested. Epic would not be
interested in merging into either Prestige or Razor 1911 because
were looking to compete with them and to eventually replace them.

Subject : Small Group+Big EgoCB4? Affiliation : CB4 Leader
: What kind of group is CB4 Cellblock 4?
: First of all, I would like to tell you who I am. Like 8 months
ago, my ex-boyfriend and YES, I am a girl introduced me to some
of the members of oG The Original Gangsters Syndicate, a little
Swedish group. I started supplying for them. Later on, I
established contact with Ivanhoe now one of the leaders of CB4
and some of the other members of the old Rebels. When they left
Rebels and started CB4, they convinced me to join them as a leader
of the group. CB4 is a release group. Our goal is to crack and
release all that we can get our hands on and to have FUN!!!
: When you mentioned the old Rebels, to what were you referring
to?
: Some of the old members of Rebels left Rebels to help start CB4.
Leatherman, who was a former leader in Rebels, started CB4 near
the end of 1995 with only a few crackers. In the beginning of
1996, 2 more Rebels members, Ivanhoe and Mercury, joined his
efforts. In February, CB4 merged with oG, where some of my
seniors and I joined CB4, and thats when CB4 became a real group,
and not just one of the small groups. Later on, Leatherman left
the group due to personal problems and after a short while,
Imposter joined CB4 as a leader.
: Do you consider your group, CB4, a top notch releasing group?
: Well, we want to stay a small group, with only 1 or 2 member sites
and no boards or couriers. Sure, a small group can have problems
as well, but its easier to keep the group together when everyone
knows each other. That makes it easier to work together as a
team. All our members are 100 loyal to the group, and you know,
you dont have to be big in size to be a great release group!
Sometimes, when things are going really well with the releasing
and stuff, its easy to develop a big ego. But in a small group
like ours, there is always someone there to pull you down from the
skies again. To be honest with you, it is more important that our
members have the right personality, than that they can supply like
7 releases a week. The most important thing for us is to have
fun, and we like the laid back attitude towards the scene.
: Has CB4 ever released warez before other release groups?
: Yes, we have released like 10 to 20 releases a week in the last
couple of weeks.
: Does CB4 specialize in releasing games, or utils, or both?
: We only release utils.
: Would you say that CB4 ranks up with other utils groups such as
Mortality?
: Yeah, sure, we are kicking the scene right now and we have lots
and lots of releases, but as I said before, the most important
thing for us is to have fun and we are not competing with anyone.
: Please tell us what having fun in your group is like.
: Well, we all do it because its a nice way of breaking the law,
hehe, no. Its fun to see how far you can go with a small group
like ours. Many other BIG groups wants to merge with us, but we
want to keep the group small so that we dont HAVE to do things in
any other way but our own CB4 way.
: How long has CB4 been around in the scene?
: Eh, Leatherman started the group in 1995 and we have been
releasing like 10 to 20 releases a week since February.
: Where do you guys get so many releases? How do CB4 suppliers
obtain their software?
: No, now Im lying to you. In February and March, we had like
20-30 releases a month. Hey, never tell anyone how our suppliers
get their hands on the software! Rule 1!!!
: Let me take a wild guess, are they beta testers?
: Bwhahahhaha, I wont tell you!!!
: Youve made your point abundantly clear that CB4 is a small group,
but it is probably receiving plenty of applications each week.
For those who might be interested, how are applicants selected to
be given membership in CB4?
: Like I said before, the most important thing for us when we look
at applicants is not whether or not they can supply thousands of
releases, but their personality. We want to keep the group small,
so I guess its hard to join us.
: I have asked many people about CB4, it seems that no one has ever
heard of the group including me, you said CB4 was very good and
that it released 10 to 20 releases a week, and yet, nobody knows
about the group, how can that be?
: Well, perhaps they dont read RCN!? Or perhaps youve been asking
the wrong people? Nah, but we are a small group and we dont make
much noise. Our releases are on all the big sites and you have
them in your weekly warez list, so I dont know why people havent
heard about us.
: You mentioned earlier that some other groups wanted to merge with
CB4, can you name some?
: No, I dont want to do that. I dont know if the other groups
would like that, but I can tell you this, those groups that asked
us are the biggest in the scene. :

Subject : We TAKE What We Want! Affiliation : EfM Founder
: Ive been informed that tHA is one of the largest internet
takeover groups around, is its reputation warranted? What does
tHA do that makes it so well known?
: Well, to begin with tHA isnt the group name, it is tHA EfNet
Mafia, and the acronym is EfM, but we are a bunch of well known
people on the Internet that well, just takeover IRC channels as a
challenge and during our free time try to takeover those channels
to see if we can overcome the odds.
: What does tHA stand for then? I always thought that tHA was the
abbreviation of the group name, but if its not, then what does it
stand for?
: No tHA, doesnt stand for anything. I am not sure where that
might have come from. It was just always the first name of our
group.
: So EfM only takes over channels that are deemed impossible to
takeover? Which channels has EfM takenover in the recent weeks?
: Recently, well, most likely the largest channel we have taken has
been channel Exceed, but we lost it after a mere 10 minutes, and
smaller channels that we have taken over range from MircScripts,
Eggdrop, and many of the kid/teen/incest sex pics, Femdom,
channels covering a large span of our taken channels.
: Has EfM ever tried taking over channels such as TwilightZone
where a lot of the only people that hang out there happen to be
IRC ops. That would be a challenge, but it would also range on
the stupid side as well, right?
: I personnaly cannot afford being k-lined off any more EfNet
servers, but it hasnt been tried for obvious reasons. Some
members have been plotting for a channel on DalNet called
DragonRealm with is the equivilant channel on DalNet.
: Taking over channel Exceed must piss off some fATE Fast Action
Trade Exchange members right? I mean, dont you think it might
be working against the scene to takeover channels where people can
freely distribute warez?
: No one in EfM is a so called warez puppies as deemed by EfM
members. But definitley, especially MadCrew the people that
guard Exceed for fATE. Our members are mainly just serious
hackers and taking over channels is relaxing fun. Also, channel
exceed is not the only warez channel that we have taken,
warez99, warez69, warez, warez-weapon have all fallen victim
to us recently.
: What happens when a channel falls victim to EfM, do you guys try
to keep ops over a victimized channel permanently, or perhaps you
guys just close those channels down by making them +i?
: In the past we have just done it for fun and only kept control for
24 hours +/- a few hours not much longer. But recently, grudges
are forming between us and many channels, which may or may not
force us to hold or shut down the channel for a longer time. Most
likley Ansi has been the channel we have help for the longest
time, which was I think a day or two. We really didnt have a
problem with Ansi to begin with, just one of our members and one
of their ops kind of got into a grudge match, and it had to be
settled.
: But why settle a grudge betwee a channel Ansi op and a EfM member
by fucking up Ansi, and in the process, fucking up so many other
innocent bystanders? There are a lot of people that like to chat
in Ansi, and shutting it down really fucks things up needlessly.
: It was a match between 2 people until the other person spoofed an
address and grabbed our channel, which makes our people pissed off
and then after we were done made their people pissed off. It all
went hand in hand. Also, who said we were nice.
: EfM has a channel? Is it open to the public, if so, whats the
name of it? I assume you wont be afraid to give out the name of
the channel EfM members hang out in, after all, I doubt the EfM
channel gets taken over much.
: We can often be spotted in the many scripting channels.
: Well, whats the EfM channel? I dont want to know where I can
find EfM members. I mean, EfM is a top notch channel takeover
group, you guys are more than able to protect your own channel, so
telling me what your channel is should not really matter right?
: Honestly, taking over channels is much more simplistic than
protecting a channel, but we will soon be moving to EfM and we
can all be found there. We HAD a web page until the provider
found it to be illegal and is now being moved to a mirror
provider. We do not have a Ascii NFO file or a loader.
: To takeover channels, scripts can be very useful. Are there any
EfM members that write private takeover scripts, or other private
scripts that help collide, etc?
: All of the members have their own personal prefrences, we have and
EfM script which is 3/4 of the way done. To deal with the scripts
we have, some of the MOST TALENTED and poplular scripters around
such as IceKitten, god also President of EfM, Cyko, Chak, JFK,
Jester, and countless others which are all working together on
forming this members only script.

Subject : Bad+BadGood? Affiliation : Legion Council
: Many know that Legion started a few weeks ago, and has shown its
presence in the utils scene as a group with a lot of potential. I
am aware that Legion came about as a merge, but which groups
merged to form Legion?
: Basically, Legion was a merge between Siva and Logistix, but 000
former leader of Dawn/Fierce also brought along some of their
members after it died, and so what Legion really is, is the best
of Dawn, Logistix, and Siva.
: The best of Dawn, Logistix, and Siva? From what I know, none of
the 3 groups had any real quality and reputation. How has
bringing the best of the 3 groups formed a better and more
respectable group, Legion?
: What we really did was cut a lot of members down. We took all our
suppliers respectively, and some other important members, and
created a new group with 3 times the suppliers, and we are all
very dedicated and working toward being a competition to the more
respectable utils releasing groups. And we all treat each other
with respect, work together, and that is what really brings a good
group together.
: I am aware that Judge Dredd was the leader of Dawn, but I do not
see him as a part of Legion? Was he taken out of Legion because
he was dead weight? Or did Legion merely take the suppliers out
of Dawn and left all other members of Dawn to themselves?
: Well, Dawn wasnt really considered a part of the merge I think.
This is because 000 came to Legion after Logistix and Siva had
already merged for a few days, but as for Judge Dredd, I havent
seen him for a long time, and I think hes with a courier group
right now.
: Were there any problems that resulted when the merge did take
place?
: What we really needed was some organization at first, but after a
little while, everything went well, and we had our releases going.
However, since we had some top couriers in the group, they were
all arguing about who gets to spread the releases to which sites.
That was bothering us for a few days, but in the end, we got it
all settled down, and everything went smoothly from there on.
: Which top couriers argued about where the releases should be
spread, and how did everything eventually settle down? Did you
just tell all your couriers to stop arguing, or did you have to
threaten to kick them out of Legion before they would listen?
: I would rather not reveal their names, but we have thought about
it for a while, and have asked a few of them to resign or upload
to another site. But in the end, everything worked out alright,
no conflicts, nothing.
: Many young utils groups, and by far, Legion is not an exception,
go through troubles when they first release. Nearly all young
utils groups go through troubles of releasing utils that are
broken or are dupes. How has Legion answered to those that accuse
it of releasing warez that are broken and on several occasions,
releases that are dupes?
: I have no comment, but I do believe that we have not duped on any
release.
: Do you believe that there might be any egos within the group? For
example, a few days ago, when I joined channel Legion, I was
threatened of being banned from Legion by X-Factor, Legion
Council, simply because I was joining the channel to look for a
friend, and when I couldnt find my friend, I left the channel.
He got extremely mad at me and started yelling at me because I
joined and then left the channel. Do you believe that attitudes
as such might be hurting the group? After all, nobody likes
working with stuckup egos.
: Well, X-Factor is an exception. Ive known him for a while, hes
special. He just about pissed off everyone in the group,
including me, but hes a nice guy if you know him. But as for the
egos, there have been no egos in the group, and if there ever will
be, it will be dealt with seriously.
: In your opinion, how does Legion stand among the better utils
groups such as PWA Pirated with Attitudes and Rebels?
: We are still new at this, but our members all have experience, and
we are still in the process of organization, but once everything
is settled, we will be a competition to them. We got all the
suppliers we need, and all we need now is time, time to build up
our name so we can stand up there with some of the other stronger
utils groups.
: You mentioned earlier that there were conflicts between different
top couriers within Legion. Has that hindered Legions ability in
seeking after an official courier group to courier Legion
releases?
: About official couriers, we had a lot of thought on that. But we
do have a strong Internet team, and we are on all the top sites of
the world, so couriering shouldnt be a problem. However, we did
consider Empire as our official couriers, but the
negotiations/terms came out differently from what we discussed, so
we decided to go with Malice at the moment.
: What were these negotiations/terms that were not met by Empire?
Did Empire not live up to their word? Or perhaps Legion was
simply more interested in being affiliated with Malice because it
is an older group and is more well known?
: Well, Empire did not meet the terms that one of their staff said,
because it seemed that their staff have different points of view.
We had a great offer from Empire, and after it was all settled,
another Empire staff gave us a different story. And since a few
of the Legion Council are also members of Malice, and Malice is an
older group with a lot more experience, and had an even better
offer, it makes sense to have them spread our releases.

Subject : fATE Lacks Support? Affiliation : WWR High Membership
: WWR World Wide Releasing never ceases to amaze me. Its one of
those small groups that have been around for a long time, but has
yet to change much. How is that so? And for those who dont know
much about WWR, what kind of release group is WWR?
: Well, WWR has gotten itself a big reputation on a local level, but
not so much on the Internet. WWR is a releasing group, and it
releases utils. I guess we didnt got the right people for doing
the right stuff. We had fATE Fast Action Trade Exchange
couriering for us, but that didnt help much either.
: Why has it gained respect only on a local level?
: As I said, we didnt had the right people to do the couriering
stuff, and localy it was more easier for our own couriers to move
WWR releases from board to board without calling long distance or
phreaking for it.
: Certainly, fATE could only help WWR spread warez in as much as WWR
can release, and in that, I have yet to see much, so the fault was
not with fATE, but with WWR. What did you expect fATE to do for
WWR that would have helped the group?
: Well, first, fATE was coming to me with their offer, to courier
for WWR. I of course said yes and told the other high membership
about it. It wasnt what I expected it to be. I thought they
would courier NOT only to their sites, but IRC offers and BBS
also, and I thought that they would support WWRs boards as well.
I guess I was wrong.
: Most utils groups have seniors that are based in the U.S., but
Ive been informed that most WWR seniors live in Europe, is that
true?
: Yes, we have two seniors that live in the U.S., and two that live
in Europe.
: What are some of WWRs quality releases in the recent weeks?
: Some of WWRs best releases include Visual Basic v4.2, Delphi
v2.1, Romworks, Access Developer v7.0, and Paint Shop Pro v4.0.
: After WWR left fATE, did WWR seek out for another courier group
that could satisfy its needs?
: Well, that leave happened only 2 days ago, so for now, I dont
know where to go, there is Malice, RTS Request to Send, RiSC
Rise in Superior Couriering, and others. Im just waiting for
the right courier group to show up that will help WWR out in
couriering.
: What makes you think that any of the above mentioned courier
groups would want to be official couriers for WWR? What would you
offer them? You could offer them releases, and you named some
good ones just a few minutes ago, but many of them were dupes and
were thus nuked off all the major boards.
: ALL of them? Well, I cant really tell now what I have to offer.
If theyll throw an offer or demand at me, Ill try to fulfill it
and go with it.
: What makes WWR different from other utils groups? There are tons
out there and WWR might just be a dime a dozen. What makes it
better than other utils groups, or perhaps, its not?
: Well, I didnt say were better than anyone out there. Its just
that there are TONS of utils coming out everyday in the stores,
and not all the groups can release those utils. So I try to fill
in the missing spot of those utils and release them.
: ... there are TONS of utils coming out everyday in the stores,
and not all the groups can release those utils, what do you mean
by that? Why cant other utils groups release what WWR releases?
Are WWR releases of low quality, and thus, other utils groups
refuse to release them?
: Well, some suppliers go to the store and bring whatever there is,
and sometimes they miss one or two things. So here are two good
utils to worth releasing, and woops, no one got it. So I try to
grab it, and release it. I also forgot to mention that we dont
release any shitty util that comes out, we try to release only the
utils that people will ACTUALLY use for their needs. We dont
release those shitty screen savers that people are juming just to
release it. You saw some of the titles I said, and you saw those
are requested utils, so we release them.
: There is one problem though, I just went through a dupe check list
on BBX, a very fast RiSC site, and none of those files you
mentioned are on there released under WWR. I also received word
that the WWR releases you mentioned are not on there because they
were nuked for being fakes or dupes, why is that?
: Dupes? You saw any where else that someone released those? And I
cant prove you that those were fakes. The only thing that you
could do to check them, is to download them yourself and see for
yourself. Maybe its not on the sites because weve just started
then and we were local. Maybe someone told the siteops to nuke
them because they were dupes and fakes and the siteops without
checking it, just nuked it.
: That is very possible, how long has WWR been around on the
Internet?
: Weve been on the internet for about 3 to 4 months, and weve been
around in the scene for about 7+ months total.

Subject : Another Dead Merge? Affiliation : Dawn President
: What was your position in the late Dawn, and what were your duties
for that group?
: I was the founder and the leader of Dawn team since October of
1995.
: I know that Dawn the games group died in 1995 when it tried to
merge into Legacy, another games group of which I was a part of,
but I also know that Dawn the utils group was later revived in
1996 and became quite prominent, yet once again, it has died, why
is that so?
: We started out as a game group back then, releasing some exellent
games, but then somewhere in the beginning of 1996 we decided to
release both games and utilities. Then I decided to stay with
utils and when Tyranny came back I went to them and Dawn became a
utils only group. We had released some pretty good stuff then,
and was offered a lot of merges, but I I had bad expierence with
merges, plus they were all in-merges meaning that Dawn was losing
its name, until Fierce team came along.
: What happened when to Dawn when the Fierce team came along?
: They were releasing very legit utilities back then, and they
agreed to keep the name Dawn, and I thought to myself that in that
time things couldnt be better, Dawn in RCNs weekly utils review
in one of the weeks finished 2nd after PWA and now had more power,
but I was wrong.
: I do remember that Dawn finished 2nd in the utils review, and that
is very good for a new utils group. Dawn had a very good week, so
it only seemed natural to show them off to the masses, but you
also mention, but I was wrong. How were you wrong, and when did
you realize that you were wrong?
: When I had to take 2 week break because of personal reasons and I
left group for Ebola and Darkrage. I am not going to blame either
fo them. Ebola had recieved 1000 phone bill and Darkrage had
family problems, Anyway, when I return there was a complete mess,
the channel had about 50 people in fighting and bullshitting. I
just couldnt take it. I kicked everyone out and I decided to
keep all of the loyal Dawn members, most of which were also
suppliers.
: So you kicked everyone out of your group that couldnt supply, but
that still should not have killed Dawn. As long as you had
suppliers, you should have been able to keep Dawn releasing. Why
did Dawn eventually die then?
: We did not die. We were looking for a nice place to merge. We
had the opportunities to merge into X-Force. Theyre a great team
but somehow when my people voted, they voted not to join them.
Personally, I loved that opportunity, but I always consider the
opinions of our people. They wanted to go with Mortality, and I
even sent Cryptic Pain a small release, but he just didnt seem
too trustful of me, nothing personal, but yesterday we found our
place where we want to be.
: What place is this? Where did Dawn merge into?
: As of yesterday all Dawn members are getting ready for a complete
team merging with Sodom and their great friendly team run by Tok
and Jecksom. I had been friends with both of them, and I think we
can kick some real ass, theyre already on top 5 no doubt!
Together we can really kick it.
: What are you talking about? There is no way Sodom is not one of
the top 5 utils groups. Its not even in content, there are tons
of other groups that are in much better views than they are. I
can easily find 5 other utils groups that easily outrank Sodom
both in release power and reputation. For example, Im sure that
DOD Drink or Die is better than Sodom. Im also sure that
Mortality, PWA, Rebels, and X-Force are all better than etter than
Sodom. That makes 5 other utils groups. Perhaps you merged Dawn
into Sodom for alterior motives?
: No, I believe that Sodom has better potentials than anyone else
right now. Just watch them. There was no other reason for Dawn to
merge into Sodom.
: Yes, they do have the potential, but unachieved potential is
useless. Anyway, what position will you be taking once you are a
part of Sodom?
: Were about to discuss it when Tok returns home from Moscow, but
Ill have at least a council position.
: Why do you think Cryptic Pain, Mortality President, was so
cautious in having you supply him with releases. Shouldnt he
have been grateful if those releases were of quality? Do you have
any ideas why he would not trust you?
: Oh no, he was grateful, but I told him not to release it, because
in return for Dawn helping Mortality, he had to go with our
couriering group to help Dawn out. After I sent him a release and
asked him if hes ready to go with our couriering group he said he
wasnt sure and I told him not to release util I gave him, I
didnt trust him enough.
: What did you give him to release? Was it a quality util? If it
was, he would have jumped on the opportunity instead of jerking
around with you right? Also, which courier group did you ask him
to go with?
: Oh, he wasnt jerking around. Its just that he had another
promise to someone else. No, that was not a quality release, but
it was very legit and useful 2 disk util. Well, I dont think it
matters now. Actually, there is a big story with that, but its a
completely different story which has nothing to do with Cryptic
Pain ofcourse. Hes a good leader and he made Mortality one of
the best groups in the world in a short period of time, so
whatever I said about me trusting him, it has nothing to do with
his great abilities as a leader.
: Also, you mentioned earlier, ... pretty good stuff then, and was
offered a lot of merges, but I I had bad expierence with merges,
plus they were all in-merges meaning that Dawn was losing its
name. Isnt Dawns current merge into Sodom an in-merge? Why
arent you more cautious of Sodom, I thought you said that you had
bad experiences with merges?
: Yes, but this time I am not aiming to run a group. I am going to
meaning that earlier when there was a merge I consider myself
being of the leader, but now I stayed in the warez scene but Im
also join tradinng scene - a scene of a real challange and risc,
not just sitting and packaging releases. Therefore youre now
interviewing Dredd Impact. I now officially change my name from
Judge Dredd to Dredd Impact. As for Sodom, Ill be doing
everything I can to get it on top.

Subject : Make Up Your Mind! Affiliation : fTP Leader
: What kind of courier group is fTP Full Throttle Pirates?
: Our intention was to courier mainly to sites belonging to fTP and
some IRC couriering too. We might start releasing as soon as we
get us some suppliers.
: It is my understanding that your group is based in Finland, is
that true? If so, has that hindered fTPs ability in competing
with American based courier groups?
: Well, I am from Finland and some of our members are from Finland
too, but that doesnt mean that we couldnt compete with American
groups.
: What makes your courier group fTP different from any other courier
group? There are tons out there and many people might think that
fTP is just another lame courier group, is that true?
: We arent new to the scene, like some lame courier groups that
were started by newbies. We know what we are doing.
: How long have you been in the scene and what previous experience
do you have with running courier groups?
: Ive been in the scene for over 4 years or so, and Ive couriered
for many good and lame courier groups.
: Which courier groups might those be? Which of them do you
consider good, and which of them do you consider lame?
: Yes.
: Could you be more specific?
: There were many. Most of them were lame.
: Five minutes ago, you said Ive couriered for many good and lame
courier groups. Which good courier groups have you couriered
for? Let me rephrase my question, which good courier groups have
you been in?
: Ive couriered for Insanity and Malice.
: Why did you leave Malice? It certainly does have a better
reputation than fTP. Did you leave Malice to pursue your own
goals of running your own courier group? It seems like everyone
says theyve been a part of Malice these days, Ill have to check
with Dorian Hawkmoon.
: It was a long time ago, besides I wanted to put up my own group.
: Many courier groups enjoy being official couriers for release
groups. Is fTP official couriers for any release groups?
: Yes. We are official couriers for the NEW Legacy.
: Has this NEW Legacy given fTP lots to courier? Last I checked,
they have yet to release anything.
: The new Legacy gave us nothing to courier so far. Well, we are
new and so is Legacy. Or its lame, I dont know.
: What are your future plans for fTP? How do you suppose to make it
a better group than it is now?
: Of course! We just started. Our future plans are to start
releasing as soon as we get some more suppliers.
: So you plan to make fTP a release group? I thought fTP was a
courier group?
: Yes. Clone is the other leader. We already got some suppliers.
: Wait, if fTP is a release group, then why is fTP official couriers
for Legacy? You guys really ought to make up your minds.
: We started out as couriers, and our future plans are to become a
releasing group.
: Do you guys plan on releasing games and utils, or do you plan on
specializing fTP releases to either games or utils?
: I have decided that we will be releasing both games and utils, but
we have not yet decided.

Subject : ROR is Dead? I wish.
Heres a little log file of what happened in channel Reflux. I was
about to celebrate when I found out that ROR Release on Rampage was
finally dead, I mean, after all, dont we all hate downloading fake
releases? Im tired of downloading something to find that the filedates
to the games have been rigged so it wouldnt get nuked, and Im tired of
downloading beta games that have been hex edited to say that theyre the
final version of something theyre not. You might be confused as to why
ROR and RLX Reflux might have something in common, but hopefully, the
log file will help clear things up.
Crack Tklp, is ROR dead? Is Reflux the new ROR?
Tklp Yes!! Duh!!! ROR is now Reflux, but keep it quiet until we
debut.
Crack Tklp, when are you going to tell everyone?
Tklp When we do our first release. Warhammer, make us a fileid.diz
and give me the script. I thought you wanted to join.
Warhammer Fucking hell man, when you want something, you gotta have
it. Ok, hold on, Ill do one right now.
Tklp Remember to keep it quiet, dont tell anyone because when we do
come in, we are coming in with a BANG!
*** RI-X has left channel Reflux
Some of you might be asking yourselves, why would ROR change its
name to Reflux? After all, ROR has been around for about 10 months now,
and that does give it a reputation as being a stable group even though
that might not be the case. Tklp has worked very hard in giving ROR a
good name, hes very good at what he does. I have to give credit where
its due, he was a pro at making the Quake Beta look like the Quake
Final. He even fooled me until Jay Wilbur from iD Software told me that
RORs release was not the final version. Not every lamer can pull lame
tricks like that, only really special lamers are stupid enough to do
something like that.
When word thanks to RCN got around that RORs release of Quake was
an intentional fake, many of the major bulletin boards and ftp sites
decided to pool together and blacklist all ROR releases. That made Tklp
shit a brick, a real big brick, or rather, a small house. Nobody would
let him upload his fake releases anymore, because ROR*.* was blacklisted
on so many popular boards. Tklp then decided that it was time to change
his group name from ROR to RLX.
Siteops and sysops, if you were smart enough to ban ROR*.*, well,
you might as well change ban RLX*.* too. Theres really no difference
between ROR and RLX except for the name. Ill even show you the old ROR
nfo and the new RLX nfo, and you can tell that RLX is still led by Tklp,
and that many of the same ROR members are also RLX members.

Subject : Legion vs. Pinnacle
The following is a log file where Acidplain from Legion starts a
little brawl with some Pinnacle members. I should warn you that some of
the content might not be too revealing for some people, but nonetheless,
the true nature of Legion leaders must be told.

Acidplain Zima Man...
ZimaMan Acidplain, you dont have a life.
Acidplain I dont have a life. Whats Pinnacle releasing today?
ZimaMan Since I have been in Pinnacle, we never had a dupe. We
released 4 times today and we have 2 more to go. And one
release that I was supposed to release was released today by
some other group. Acidplain, my releases are 500 each.
Acidplain Zima Man, like you pay for them.
ZimaMan Of course not, I never pay.
Acidplain Me neither.
ZimaMan I have connections in a company and Im getting one more in
another company.
Acidplain I have a phone. Thats it, this place died.
ZimaMan I get all the Visaul Basic shit. Oh yea, a mad good release
from Pinnacle in the next 3 days, First Aid 95 Deluxe NETWORK
EDITION with a 10 user license. That shit is mad expensive.
Acidplain Im going to tell you something, on that web web you gave me
last night, v1.1b is there, you need to crack it, expires in
30 days, registration shit. So get to work.
ZimaMan We can crack it.

Subject : Prestige Dumps Loyal Courier HQ?
The following is a log file of my conversation with Crazy Horse
while I was chatting with him on his 10 node board called Purgatory,
former Courier HQ for Prestige. And I do emphasize on FORMER.
CrzyHorse Oh, Nueromage and I are not in Prestige anymore.
RblChickn Ouch, what happened? Prestige dumped you guys or did you
guys dumped Prestige? Dont worry, you shouldnt feel
embarrassed. You can tell the truth.
CrzyHorse Haha, I dont know if I should say anything yet. It just
happened yesterday, but I guess I can tell you.
RblChickn I was informed that there was fighting in channel Prestige,
some Prestige members logged it for me. I just havent time
to check on it yet.
CrzyHorse I didnt think it was in the channel though.
RblChickn Then that must have been something else. What happened with
you then?
CrzyHorse There is a board in my area code that the sysops here and
the sysops there are friends. A long time ago, we said that
we would not take each others affiliations. We made an
agreement and also would not be in the same groups. We felt
it was better for the area code to have a lot of
affiliations rather than just 2 or 3. So, the sysops of
that board learned how to supply games and are doing so for
Razor 1911.
RblChickn Ah.. so this is a competition for suppliers between Prestige
and Razor 1911?
CrzyHorse Prestige made it seem like they were going to offer the
sysops of that board membership in Prestige as member
boards, but because of the agreement that we made, the
sysops would have been unable to accept the Prestige offer.
They would not have accepted anyway, even if Prestige asked,
they have ALWAYS wanted to be in Razor 1911 and would not
leave. But because of the agreement, Prestige didnt want
to be tied up so they said that they didnt want our board
anymore. Then, they rethought it and offered our board as a
member board but not as a Courier HQ anymore. We declined.
RblChickn I see.
CrzyHorse So that is the story. And I think it is total political
group bullshit. They didnt even ask the sysops of the
board. They were thinking. If the original agreement
between the sysops was not there, we could have gotten the
Razor 1911 suppliers in Prestige. But the truth is, if the
Razor 1911 sysops REALLY wanted in the Prestige, they would
have come to Prestige and said, Look, we want in Prestige,
and then we would have worked something out.
RblChickn Whos the sysop of this Razor 1911 board?
CrzyHorse You figure it out.
RblChickn Ah, come on, dont be a bad sport. How am I supposed to
know whos who?
CrzyHorse Look in the Razor 1911 nfo. Youll figure it out I am sure.
I cant tell you everything, no fun in that.
I never did find the time to investigate on that matter, but the
names arent really important. This log file shows that games group
politics all revolve around one thing, if you can supply games, youre
important. If you cant, then youre just another Crazy Horse, you
might run a 10 node board, you might have helped the group in the past
by being their Courier HQ, and you might even be as loyal to the group
as a son is to a father, but in the end, none of that matters.
Im just glad I dont have to worry about supplying the latest
releases out for a games group. And if youre a supplier, find a group
that likes you for YOU, and not because you can supply, youll be
happier that way.

Subject : Temp Directories
About a year and a half ago, the Internet swept over the warez scene
and introduced to it a new form of transporting files. It boasted a new
speed at which software could be distributed. Everybody would log onto
a UNIX shell account and transfer files at speeds exceeding 100k/s.
Then the WWW came about and people all switched over to SLIP/PPP
accounts. And where did these super fast speeds all go? Straight
down the drain. Now 85 of the users on the Internet are logged on to
accounts that can push no more than 3k/s, and their end users are still
boasting speeds of 100k/s, and I sit here confused. These accounts are
as gay as AOL accounts, slow!
But there are still a select few of us that do use the traditional
UNIX shell account. Admittedly, its a little harder to use than the
PPP account, and it takes a few tries to get to know, but once one gets
a shell account to work well and knows how to use it to perfection, the
Internet is just a toy to be played with. One of the great toys is the
infamous temp directory. A temp directory is a location on a UNIX shell
provider on which big files can be stored for temporary use. All
providers have the directory, but it becomes useful beyond practicality
on the really big ones. Most UNIX shell accounts include a 5 MB disk
quota. This generally means that the average meggage of the files
stored in the directory at a certain calculation time for the month
cannot exceed 5 megabytes. Some more stingy providers restrict shell
accounts to 5 megabytes of quota at any given time, meaning that any
file transfer exceeding 5 megabytes in size will be cancelled upon
reaching this size limit. These accounts are what I would refer to as
piles of crap accounts.
We all know, however, that sometimes a HUGE release size-wise is
released and we want to download it overnight, but dont want it to get
added onto our quota size average. In this case, the temp drive may be
put to use. On most providers, this directory is /temp but that is
often a link to a directory such as /hack2/tmp. Either one works. Any
user desiring a place to store some files for a temporary amount of time
can resort to using this directory. Many providers allocate a hard
drive just for this directory, which is why it can also be referred to
as a temp drive. The user can copy his/her files to this directory and
proceed to download them, quota-free.
Still, some of us just want MORE from our temp drives! The big
providers, the ones with members from around the country, the ones with
many warez-affiliated members, are the ones that can give us that extra
knack. Some of the big providers dont care about warez on their
drives, or are just not aware of their existence. Some just choose not
to interfere in the activity of their users, as that would imply
censorship. These providers tend to have temp drives filled to the top
with the latest warez. Of course, if youre quiet, you might even be
able to snaggle some of these warez for yourself! You can copy them to
your home directory cd for download, you can copy them to another
temp drive directory that only you have user rights to man chmod for
help on how to accomplish this, or, as courtesy would have it, you
could just leech the warez directly from the directory in which they
exist. This is often the best thing to do as far as netiquette goes,
because you wont be filling up the providers drive with duplicate
files.
Anyway, a cheery hello to all of you out there that still use shell
accounts, we know theyre the best hehe, and check out your temp
drive, if youre lucky, youll find more than you expected!

Subject : Xenons Life in RCN
The past month has been filled with a multitude of emails inquiring
about Xenon, the RCN coder. The extremists expressed religious
attachments to Xenon, Xenon is my God!!! Others expressed more subtle
desires, Xenon is one of the best coders Ive seen in the scene! Some
expressed a concern for the real-life Xenon, So whats he like in real
life?! And others just wanted something in return, Can you like send
me the RCN source code? Uhuh uhuh uhuhuhuh.. So I present to you, the
life of a coder.
Xenon is 16 years old, yet his programming skills greatly exceed
those of many third year college students. His first programming
experience was on an old Timex Sinclair 1000 computer at the age of just
5 years. When I found this out, my face was of pure astonishment. When
I was busy blowing soap bubbles into the wind, he was writing a program
to blow up the world. Xenon explained, however, that at 5, he never
really made his own programs, but rather modified the work of others.
He said this quite nonchalantly and apparently didnt think anything of
it. Xenon then moved on to the Commodore 64 when he was 7, and by now,
became quite an experienced coder. He once even coded a game much like
Pacman, from scratch. He explained to me that he was a proud 7 year old
when he found out how to use sprites for smoother scrolling and better
looking graphics. I was perplexed. At 9, Xenon acquired a super dooper
Apple IIe. WOW. His BASIC skills were now running at a MILLION hertz,
but with a new and improved interface... or not. He was still cookin
at a million hertz, but as unlike the Commodore 64, the graphics were
easier to implement.
In 6th grade, at 11 years of age, Xenon discovered the awesome
capabilities of the IBM/PC XT. This baby was pushing da bitz at 4.77
Megahertz. So much for color graphics, but 720x348 was a resolution
previously unheard of. He darted to school to let the rest of his
classmates know about his new discovery, but for some reason, they
seemed disinterested. They were more concerned in the upcoming Sex-ed
class. The bell rang, and it was time to go home... or better yet, to
jet down to the garage to see if he could scrounge up some of his dads
old Compute! magazines. Then, back to his room so he could type in
some of the included programs and see what they did. If I havent made
it obvious enough, Xenon was a happy child. Xenons brother, who, by
now was about to graduate from high school, had acquired a version of
this totally k-rad new programming language called Turbo Pascal. He
wasnt so thrilled about learning a new language, but then he noticed
one of his brothers programs, and found out about a new word to add to
his now 11 year old vocabulary, COMPILE! Long as it may have seemed, it
would turn out to be a key word in his life.
Turbo Pascal was faster, and could really take advantage of his 4.77
Mhz XT. It was now easier to perform more complex tasks well, as
complex as an 11 year old mind can do. This was cool. A new thing to
do in his spare time. He could draw lines, make boxes, fill them in,
make patterns, and even use fonts! He was now in 8th grade, and again
he went to class to report of his new findings. But once more, his
classmates were not interested. When they were thinking about boobs, he
was thinking about booleans. When they were talking about girls, he was
talking aboug GotoXYs.
More recently, namely in his Junior year, Xenon met Rebel Chicken,
and Hitex and Rebel Chicken found a more useful way of using Xenons
talents. Instead of having him code random programs just for fun, we
used it for extensive work with graphics and sound. So now, you are
running a program taking advantage of all of his skills. Let me
continue by explaining a few things about the coding in RCN. I am doing
this in response to the many letters to the editors that I have received
in this past week. Many of you have requested to know how RCN is coded.
What the backbone of it is, and, most importantly, to see its source
code. I will try to answer all of your questions here, except, of
course, the last one grin.
RCN is coded in Turbo Pascal v7.0 for DOS. Many rumors have erupted
that we code it completely in Assembly ASM. Those are completely
untrue, and theres a very good reason for why they are. It would be
stupid to. Coding in 100 ASM takes an extremely long amount of time
and there are no known benefits to doing so for something such as RCN.
Turbo Pascal v7.0 does a wonderful job of implementing inline assembly
ASM code within the Pascal code, and there is no reason to dispute
that. The bulk of the interface is coded in Pascal, with the single
exception of the text scroller. That involves changing the vertical
offset of the text screen, a process called panning. Nifty, eh? We
use the BIN format for storing the text screens, simply because it is
easier to implement into the code, and is one less thing to worry about.
Well, sort of. It then poses the problem of dealing with files
exceeding 64k in the extracted EXE, BIN files compress extremely well.
Memory is accessed in 64k blocks, and Xenon has implemented impressive
swapping algorithms that barely cause any delay when viewing the
magazine.
The 3D design at the beginning of RCN is probably one of the more
complicated parts of Reality Check Network. It may look simple, but it
involves the manipulation of polygons on 3 axis, all the while updating
light shadowing from different angles. The color palette is constantly
updating to accommodate a wide array of colors while displaying
different shades of each in the spinning of a mere 3 letters. Groovy,
isnt it? The RCN ending is the displaying of a 320x200 we tried
640x480 last week, but it made the EXE too big graphic while doing real
time rendering of a graphic effect superimposed on it. But by far the
most complex part of the ending is what to call it. I insist its a
magnifying glass, but Rebel Chicken argues that if it were a magnifying
glass, it would have a stick to hold it by. A friend once suggested
that it is an elipse of which only one side is displayed but that didnt
go over too well with Xenon, so we here at RCN studios just refer to it
as the thing.
The most impressive part of RCN is, of course, the game. Many
suggest that we have stolen Tyrian, but I beg to differ. It never took
you 30 minutes to beat one level of Tyrian. The game engine is coded
purely in ASM, merely because Xenon has yet to learn how to code a good
game in Pascal and how to optimize his code so it doesnt require a
Pentium Pro to run on. The hard part is the randomizing of enemies
while calculating the position of your ship and its relation to other
ships and their bullets. Without the use of ASM, all this crawled on a
Pentium 100. With all this to worry about, we decided Epic Megagames
wouldnt be too discouraged if we merely borrowed their graphics for a
few weeks. And anyway, its free advertising. Moreover, the game takes
a mere 30k zipped, where Tyrian takes 3 disks zipped.
RCN is, still, probably most amazing in its behind-the-scenes work.
In RCNs Issue 12, we had 8 articles and 8 interviews, but that was
about where the content ended. All the content, of course, edited and
looked over by Hitex or Rebel Chicken to insure quality in context as
well as in content. However, in RCN 14, we added reviews and charts to
our to-do list, and that lead to an extreme work overload. We decided
to put Xenon to work we dont like to see him sitting around, it makes
us feel guilty. Now, we just do all our work in a regular DOS Edit
window and never worry about formatting it into a nice looking layout.
We leave that up to Xenons RCN Helper. Hah, and you thought we
actually slaved over an Acid Draw screen for hours on end. Hell no, DOS
Edit is much better grin.
It seems that technology has always just barely kept up with the
need of todays software, and the same can be said about RCN. Our
coding has always just barely kept up with our needs. Using the old
system of publication, RCN would never make it out the door in one week.
Using Xenons latest coding, however, we have the resources needed to
keep up with the influx of submitted articles and interviews.
Xenon is definitely one of the scenes greatest, we all know that
without his great coding, RCN would just be an oversized version of
Inquisition available on WWW.RCN.ORG, and none of us would want that!

Subject : A Warez School?
The most common way people get started in the warez scene is not for
prestige or privilge. It is for a couple of applications or games that
theyre after and wish to grab without having to pay for them. When
they first go into warez rooms on IRC and start trading they suddenly
feel an immense surge of power from a forbidden well. When they see
whats on offer, regardless of how big, whether they actually need it or
not, indeed if they will ever use it after downloading it. They just
download it anyway, just another bargaining chip to bring to the channel
for the games or utils they want. Its become the rudimentry currency
of the internet underground. The months most publicised releases always
being the most sought after. Then after this introductory phase when
they have all the software they want they still frequent the channels
semi-serving to the new traders, a cry of, What do you want? will
always respond with, What have you got? when they are at this phase.
Once they tire of this level of interaction on the warez scene they
move onto trying to provide services for others. Serv-u ftp sites over
28.8 are a common sight as well as mIRC fserves. What with all the
obvious channel names taken they create a new one and invite people onto
it in the hope it will gain popularity and will become a permanent
fixture on the IRC landscape. However with their inexperience in
scrpiting and creating a bot these channels tend to blossom and fold
with the founders appearences on the network. More determined
providers find suppliers outside of IRC and setup small warez groups
releasing or couriering. These groups dont last very long but with
perserverence they will get offered a place in a medium sized group and
start in the scene proper.
After a while playing in these leagues watching all the bigger,
better groups beat you to releasing and couriering because all the
members who have something to offer are already working for these
groups. If youre lucky youll catch a break and pull of something
special which will grab the attention of some of the bigger groups then
youll get pulled into the big leagues and swap in and out of groups for
a while until settling in to a group where some of the people they knew
before in the little leagues have settled as well then it pretty much
ends there until they quit the scene.
The above bears resemblence to the average life of a warez trader.
There are some variations, such as moving into the realms of emags based
on the scene. A sort of niche in the market, if you will. This fine
magazine bears proof to it. In my opinion, a lot of time could be saved
if the scene was better organised at the basic level. Letting these
warez pups not my choice of term, BTW run riot in the channels without
any guidance means they will mature into the scene with anarchistic
tendancies which lead to immature behavior such as channel takeovers,
and other things such as narking and all kinds of things which
ultimately sully the scene. I realize that the very nature of the
Internet is that of anarchy, however with a little self-restraint we
might end up with better traders, couriers, and suppliers whose
decisions are made with sober judgement and experience, not with
immature emotion and threating behavior. I know it may never happen,
however Id like to propose an idea to the scene as whole with I believe
would lead to an enrichment of the scene while still retaining that
wild, forbbiden side that entices many to it. Heres what I suggest...
I realize that many of the scene leaders may have grievences against
each other, and that this may be a reason why this idea would never be
taken up as it requires an agreement between a large number of groups of
a standard. The thing is youd never know what someone was capable of
until youve given them the chance to prove themselves. The elitist
nature of the majority of scene members counteract this. Their pride
wont allow them to accept that there is anyone better than them. I
suggest that an independent body be created to handle the training of
these warez pups again, not my choice of term and their progress and
abilities monitored, and at the end of their training some sort of award
or recognition that they are in some way qualified to do a particular
job in a warez group. Of course for something like this to be taken
seriously a lot of groups would have to agree to liason with this
independent body in order for an appraisal of the applicant or maybe
indeed groups would solicit this independent body for likely candidates
whenever an opening in their group became available. If a few groups
would agree to recognise the recognition this independent body bestowed
on them the scene would be better organized as this training could
encompass a wide range of things from FTP methods to general behavior in
a warez group. I realize of course that this is a dream that will never
happen due to the already choactic nature of the scene, however if
enough respected and determined people got together it could happen
groups could even begin to submit required techniques to the independent
body for inclusion in their training. How are these pups ever going to
make it up the ladder without some sort of start that anyone with a bit
of determination and skill could get. You could count on the fingers of
one hand the number of groups that provide internal training facilities.
The only way to implement this would be to have it set up with all
senior members and advisors independent of any other group to insure a
degree of fair play, then the liason members of the groups that would
recognise any of the qualifications handed out. Then of course the
students themselves who would see it as a road into a warez group with a
solid reputation. It would take some time for the standard to become
accepted practise. However if more people were trained up at the
begginer we wouldnt see any of this lamer crap that the elitist types
come out with. Just because theyve been in the scene longer and know
all their stuff doesnt mean that in three months down the line, this
supposed lamer wouldnt be running a kick ass warez group and the
original so-called elite come knocking on his door.
Everybody came from the bottom rung, only those lucky enough to
catch a break and get or become a good suppiler let their heads swell
and prat around being k-rad elite. Never forget where you came from,
you were there once, they are there now, go on. Give them a helping
hand, you wont regret it.

Subject : The Stars Tell All!
Well, here comes a letter from one of its members, not very active
lately due to personal shit going on. I was very surprised how two of
your star signs applied directly in an abstract warez real life way
to me and my present situation.
I am an Aries and the part regarding now comes a close to the
sexiest part of my life seems to sum up how I feel at the moment. My
ex-girlfriend is a Taurus and she broke up with me on last Tuesday. So
thats the issue being more easily resolved shit over. I guess the star
signs were one week late but the days were right. I am writing as I
feel the warez/pc life had a major part in the breaking up. It all
dated back to some months when I decided to courier my ass off for NBC.
I was dccing 15+ gig PER day with 3-5 dccs kicking non-stop. After
that I spent nearly 50-70 of my time on the PC as most people will
know. I did have a VERY good looking girlfriend who did love me and
all that shit. But it all came to a head as she missed spending time
with me and decided to wait and see if i would stop.
Well, of course without her telling me to spend more time with her
besides sex guess us males cant read minds like were supposed to, I
stayed on the PC and couriered more and more. IRC was also taking a lot
of time. Anyway to get to the point, yes its fun to courier, chat, and
dcc on the net but dont let it interfere with your real/love life.
Well, I am now single again and dont feel like spending too much
time on IRC or FTP sites. I guess moderation is the key and realise
this even though youre saving by download warez, are you actually
saving as would you have brought that lame game or util that took 5
hours to download because of size and shit. Anway heres to the warez
scene and I hope it thrives as more males in the scene more females
not getting sex. Thats my 2 cents for once.
*PS* A LONG serving RCN member and not even senior, hehe...

Subject : Computer and Television Monitors, Roled into One?
Most of the parts in my main desktop PC get replaced every year or
two by something newer and cooler, but Ive been staring at the same 17
Nanao video monitor since I started chatting on IRC back in 1993. Only
the case, the keyboard and the floppy drives have survived longer. Good
monitors arent cheap, but if recent history is any guide, that might be
the one part of your computer that you can think of as a long term
investment. VGA and SVGA monitors have used the same cables and
connectors for a decade now, and a top notch monitor from the early
90s, with a .28mm dot pitch and a 64kHz maximum horizontal scan rate,
still looks great by todays standards.
About those numbers, we all know that computer images are composed
of small blocks known as pixels, but the screen of a color monitor is
also a composite. Its made up of many small red, green, and blue
phospor dots, and the distance from dot to dot is known as the dot
pitch, usually measured in millimeters. Hey, when I first got my PC, I
didnt know what these meant. So I was just about as lost as any lamer
who found himself stuck in a WarezX channel not knowing what xdcc
list meant.
Most PCs are set up to display about 80 to 90 pixels per inch. If
youre handy with the metric system, youll see that each pixel covers a
bit more than a quarter of a milimeter, which is equal to a dot pitch of
.25mm. That dot pitch is found on some monitors, but .28mm is
considered acceptable. The smaller and more closely spaced the dots
are, the sharper the picture will be, and the more the monitor will
cost.
Like movies and television, computer video is drawn a sequence of
frames, one after another. The number of frames drawn each second is
the vertical scan rate. The horizontal scan rate counts rows of pixels
or scan lines, per second. These scan rates are controlled by the
computers video card, but the monitor still has to be able to keep up
with the signal it receives. A monitors scan rates are listed as upper
and lower limits. If its fed video outside of this range, the monitor
wont be able to stay in sync, and the picture will appear to rool on
the screen.
The vertical scanning rate is rarely a problem. Video cards usually
operate between 60 and 75Hz, well within the range of most monitors.
But that frame rate also affects the horizontal scan rate, which you can
compute by multiplying the number of frames per second by the virtual
resolution, adding in about 30 invisible lines scanned between video
frames. If a program runs at 1,204x768 resolution, the video card is
feeding the monitor 768 lines of video per frame. At a frame rate of
72Hz, that means the monitor has to scan more than 57,000 lines per
second, or 57kHz. High resolution monitors usually have maximum
horizontal rates of 64kHz or more.
A few features are found on newer monitors which didnt exist at the
beginning of the decade. Most support VESAs Display Data Channel
DDC, which lets the PC tell the monitor to enter a low power, energy
saving sleep mode. The latest designs are also Plug-n-PLay compatible,
allowing the operating system to detect the type of monitor thats
connected. The biggest change weve seen in monitors has been in
prices, particularly in the larger sized tubes. A big monitors extra
display area really helps when youre displaying 800x600 pixels or more
on the screen. Microsoft Windows has made it easier to use a video
cards high resolution display modes, making larger monitors much more
popular. Economy of scale has pushed prices down to the point where 17
monitors now start in the low 600s.
Thats not bad, but it isnt exactly cheap either, especially when
you can get a name brand 25 television set for less than 250. But
there are a couple of reasons why televisions cost so much less, so many
of them are built, and so little is expected of them. No matter how big
a TV screen is, it only has to display a standard 525 line, 60 frames
per second video signal. PC monitor designers assume that youll want
90 or so pixels per inch resolution on any monitor, so a bigger screen
means more pixels.
The typical 21 monitor has to support resolutions as high as
1,600x1,280 pixels, which boosts the horizontal scanning frequency up to
around 90kHz. The markets that need a monitor like that, CAD,
publishing, and professional graphics, are very small compared to the PC
market in general, it isnt so surprising that 21 monitors sell for
close to 2,000.
But there are some signs that we might be seeing large monitors in
the future that arent targeted toward such narrow markets. Toshiba
offers a 20 television that also functions as a SVGA monitor for around
700. Its maximum resolution of 640x480 pixels isnt much of a problem
for game playing, but it could be limiting for general use. Also,
Gateway 2000 has announced it plans to offer a VCR-sized system called
Destination, complete with a 31 monitor and a built-in TV tuner.
Expect to pay about 4,000 late this fall.
And then theres High Definition Telivision. The Digital HDTV Grand
Alliance proposal, recommended by the FCCs Advisory Committee on
Advanced Television Service last November, still awaits final approval
by the FCC. But the systems highest resolution is 1920x1080, with a
cinematic 16:9 width to height ratio instead of the now standard 4:3.
If HDTV catches on, well all have television sets that put most current
PC video monitors to shame. By the most optimistic estimates, HDTV
should really take off sometime early in the next century. Maybe then
Ill be able to put this old monitor out to pasture.

Hello, and welcome to Reality Check Networks all new group review!
Here I will be reviewing the 5 best games release groups in the scene.
Well, actually, *I* wont be the one reviewing them, *THEY* will be!
Its all up to the groups, this is where quantity DOES count, but you
will soon enough find that quality by far outweighs quantity. Lets
review the criteria Ill be using for judging releases. The following
is the scoring basis Ill be using :
Points :
-3 The game didnt work and a crack/fix was not released within 72
hours. The group may regain the 3 lost points by releasing a crack
or fix, even beyond the 3 day period.
1 The game was a dupe or freeware,
2 Unsatisfactory,
3 Average,
4 Above Average, and
5 Excellent!
A group may lose points the following week and have their releases
labeled as broken thus receiving the proper amout of points. If the
group has released a fix between the two issues, well give them credit
accordingly. If a group releases a fix within a 3 day period, the
game will be rated as if it worked in the first place, thus getting the
3 points it lost back and any points it would have earned. If a group
releases a fix after the 3 day period has expired, it will receive its 3
points back, but get no more. Betas may receive no more than 3 points.

Hello, and welcome to Reality Check Networks all new group review!
Here I will be reviewing the 5 best utils release groups in the scene.
Points :
-3 The util didnt work and a crack/fix was not released within 72
hours. The group may regain the 3 lost points by releasing a crack
or fix, even beyond the 3 day period.
1 The util was a dupe or freeware,
2 Unsatisfactory,
3 Average,
4 Above Average, and
5 Excellent!
A group may lose points the following week and have their releases
labeled as broken thus receiving the proper amout of points. If the
group has released a fix between the two issues, well give them credit
accordingly. If a group releases a fix within a 3 day period, the
util will be rated as if it worked in the first place, thus getting the
3 points it lost back and any points it would have earned. If a group
releases a fix after the 3 day period has expired, it will receive its 3
points back, but get no more. Betas may receive no more than 3 points.

Welcome to Dear Road Rebel! This is going to be YOUR column that is
a cross between Dear Abby and Dave Berry. The most important part of
this is YOUR participation. If you have ever had a question about the
scene or just a comment, heres the place! Have you ever wanted to know
why some people do this or that? ASK! I would love to take it to the
extreme for you and we will be happy to research it! I hope you have as
much fun with this as I will! Remember, this is YOUR column!
Dear RoadRebel,
About the disk size/number of disks limit, here are my feelings. It
is getting to where the 40 disk limit is hard to match. Game sizes keep
growing, as do utils sizes, we cant keep the limit so low. It would be
like saying my foot is growing, but I can only buy size 10 shoes. There
are many utils coming out now that are very large, especially some of
the operating systems, you dont want only part of an operating system,
you want the whole thing. I think the size of disks should stay small
enough to fit on 1 normal 1.44 meg floppy. There should be a group of
one or 2 leaders from each games and utils group, that have a monthly
meeting on IRC, for each of their type of releases. They could discuss
things like this, I personally think the current limit for games should
be 50, and utils 60.
Signed,
Manic
Dear Manic,
50 disks for a game is fine, if the game is worth it, but when they
go higher it better be a GOOD game. But I think that this 1.4 meg stuff
is shit. There is really no point to it anymore, no one uses disks.
BUT, we need to come up with a new standard for relasing that all groups
can agree with. I personally think thaty switching to 3 meg disks would
be the best, BUT it wont happen anytime soon of course.
Dear Road Rebel,
Im sure you have probably read about this topic in a computer game
magazine, but Im telling you straight out, from warez kid, to warez
kid. Many Groups like to release the games that are big, and are over
at least 30 megs. That is how it seems to be to me. I myself solely
judge a game on how long I play it, which sooner or later leads to
gameplay. If companies such as Origin keep releasing such big games,
like Wing Commander 4 6 cds, who is going to want to rip that, and
release that? Exactly, no one. My point is, I understand it is not the
releasing groups faults releasing big games, like Vikings, and Front
Page Sports Baseball 96 by Razor 1911. I like to courier warez, for DSC
Dark Side Couriers and for PTA Power Trading Arsenal but aside from
all the couriering, I also like to play the games. I dont think I am
the only one either.
As a tip for releasing groups, look for games that you can play,
instead of watching, because most of the big games are packed with
boring, full motion video. Dont get me wrong, full motion video was
awesome, when it first came out. But now that FMV is overplayed, and is
found in most games, it is more boring than exciting. Also, I have seen
a couple games where FMV has been perfectly filled in, to occupy ONE cd,
and an occasional TWO cds, but when you get to 4,5, and 6 cds, what the
hell? To be totally honest with you, I had more fun playing the game
packed in the RCN E-Mags, than I did playing Wing Commander III. If
more games were released that you could play, more people would play
them.
Signed,
Retix
Dear Retix,
I agree somewhat, BUT, I have played some larger games that I think
were ripped perfect. A good case is Afterlife by Lucas Arts, the game
was 40 disks which made most people avoid it, BUT, I leeched it and it
was WELL worth the time, the only thing really ripped was the scenarios.
I asked Prestige to release them seperate, but of course I have leeched
huge shit that sucked. As for FMV, most of it BLOWS! Rip that shit
outa there!
Signed,
Road Rebel
Dear RoadRebel,
In concern to the file size of many programs, I feel that it is a
waste to release programs more than like 20 disks because on my BBS I
noticed if I put a file online that is bigger than 12 disks, it rarely
gets downloaded unless the hype is so good for instance like Duke Nukem.
Why would someone waste their time downloading something for maybe 3 to
4 days and then have it needing a fix or not working all together.
Most people that I deal with on my system dont even have the
greatest computers with hard drives of like 800 megs. Why are they
going to want something taking up like 200 megs??? I think it is good
to make some CD-rips but do them in parts like some groups are beginning
to do like make it a mininum CD-rip then for all those who have the time
and space make a sound addon then a graphics addon so that everyone who
wants to enjoy the game can have a chance to.
For instance, people on my BBS want a Need for Speed SE minimum
CD-Rip because 56 disks is just way too many to download. I think
bigger releases are good though for Internet traders with shells because
they have the ability to grab the files a lot quicker.
Signed,
HBKid
Dear HBKid,
Well, I will leech anything off a bbs if I have the time, BUT, when
I was a sysop, I know that some people wouldnt go over like 10 disks so
I know what you are saying. I also think Need for Speed SE was a waste
of time, I mean come on. I think we would feel better about these huge
games if the release groups would use their minds and look at what they
are releasing first.
Signed,
Road Rebel
Dear Road Rebel,
There has been a lot of crap said about IRC operators in RCN lately,
and a lot more said about them in channel RCN. Id like to begin by
saying that IRC ops are NOT our enemies. Sure, weve all ran into them,
and weve all sworn revenge at one point or another, but if you know how
to deal with them, it isnt that big of a deal. Let me offer a few
suggestions.
IRC ops do NOT take out personal vendettas. When they /kill you,
they are doing their job. Only once was I mistakenly /killed and not
apologized too. They have a rather difficult job to do. Youve got to
remember that not everyone uses mass cloning to flood people and stuff.
People dont know anything about it, and those people shouldnt have to
put up with it. IRC ops are trying to keep IRC up and running for
beginners. Back in the day EfNet was created, it was just that.
However with the adding of more servers and the attraction IRC had too
good coders/hackers, people found ways to take advantages of bugs in
servers.
DO NOT RUN CLONES. Its that freaking simple. If you are so lame
you cant take out a channel with a time stamp collider, foreign
servers, or some ICMP flooding, then dont bother coming in to harass
people with your clones. There are so many people who think crap like
textbox and smoke are the coolest things around, but think about it, if
they were, why would they be freely distributed?
Understand that IRC ops are just doing their job. If they /kill
you, apologize, show you dont hold it against them. They dont sit
there /killing people going hehehHEEHEHEhehehehheh yeah cool cool die
die heehehaehHEHEHE. No, they are simply trying to keep EfNet free of
lamers. Most of them dont give a crap about it, just wait until they
go away and do it again.
I have made a LOT of IRC op friends. They are pretty damn fun to
talk to, if you just give them a chance. Theyve helped/saved my ass on
more than one occasion. I know for a fact almost every major IRC op
knows I run a crapload of bots, but they dont go around k-lining me
because it isnt a big deal. And Im nice about it. Ive been told
before by various IRC ops that another IRC op or them doesnt like my
bot on their server. So I take it off, no big deal at all. Dont argue
with individuals. Its their machine, they can do whatever they want.
One time, an oper from epix.net said I was famous. Heh, I did a
little digging and found out I have been talked about sometimes. The
point is this, were all bad ass IRC hackers, yeah, we know.
Try and remember, just for a second, back to your first time on IRC.
Yeah, youre sitting there on your Netcom shell account, loaded ircII
and wondering how the HELL you talk to people. After spending about 2
hours in the help files for ircII you figure its time to type
/channelsor whatever it was and join the first thing that caught your
eye. So you join up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!3yearoldsexpicswithrblchickn
and expect to find some rather interesting discussion, only instead to
find the channel taken over and you suddenly quit irc with Excess
Flood. Well, you would have had NO idea how to defend yourself. This
is what IRC ops are for, to help the new guys. Everytime an IRC op
steps in to make me give back a channel Ive taken over, he always says
Just let things cool down and take it back later tonight, I got a job
to do here. Or something like that. And dont go knocking Moogle,
hes killed my bots a couple times, but he saved Sailormoon twice last
week.
The point Im trying to make here guys, is show a little
understanding and cooperation. You might make a rather powerful friend.
And even if you dont, you always got someone who wont hesitate to
answer a question or help you out when you are having problems. Its
what they are for, they arent all fascist dictators, nor are they all
Communists, so dont sweat it. The last thing to remember is, NEVER
flood an IRC op. If youre that stupid, you deserve whatever you get.
Signed,
Lightwing
Dear Lightwing,
I dont think we said that all IRC ops are dicks, BUT, I would
venture say say at least 50 are power hungry pricks that like to push
people around. But, I have also learned you can get a lot done just
talking to IRC ops and not bitching at them. As far as not ragging,
Moogle goes. I think an IRC op that make a statement I can kill people
for no reason if I want to should be screwed with and pissed off as
much as possible. That is like a cop saying, I can shoot people for no
reason. And you forgot to say, IRC ops all seem to know each other,
and they all talk. I am banned off servers I have never been on, and
some I have never done anything wrong on!

The following details your forecasts depending on your astrological
sign. Each sign designates your personal lucky numbers of the week.
The following specific areas of focus include those of love and warez :
Forecast of the week : Positive planetary movement when Jupiter is
linked to Mercury will bring a new upward hill toward all goals. Things
may seem though, but your labor will prove worthwhile if you stuck with
it!
Aquarius January 21 to February 19 : Your consideration of a
leadership position in a prominent warez group would benefit
from a second opinion, so try to keep an open mind. A
long-term decision made later in the week will reap rewards
at the end of the month. Trust your intuition.
Pisces February 20 to March 20 : A romantic, creative or group
objective is well within your grasp as long as you have the
courage and commitment to pursue it. The Sun and Mercury in
your fellow water sign of Cancer are focusing on the sunny side
of life. This is your week, enjoy it!
Aries March 21 to April 20 : Friendly persuasion will serve you
better than strongarm tactics this week. Pay close attention to
particulars that hang with you in group IRC channels, and avoid
being excessively ambitious. Thursdays Sun-Mercury liaison
will help you resolve a conflict you may have with some friends
in a group IRC channel, but you must first be willing to let
others have their say.
Taurus April 21 to May 21 : An offer or opportunity may sound better
than it really is, but it is still worth exploring. With
Mercury and Jupiter united early in the week, you may be
tempted to state your terms a little too forcefully. Listen to
those who know more than you do.
Gemini May 22 to June 21 : With your ruler Mercury linked to both
Jupiter and the Sun, you can put the finishing touches on
relationships as long as you recognize the risks involved.
Dont allow yourself to be sidetracked by people who have more
time but less good sense than you.
Cancer June 22 to July 23 : Positive planetary activity in the
partnership angel of your solar chart will enhance an existing
relationship or pave the way for a new one. Plans made toward
the end of the week should reach fruition around the Full Moon
on the 30th.
Leo July 24 to August 23 : You must determine whether to follow your
gut feelings or take the logical approach regarding admission to a
group this week. Stick with your instincts and you wont go far
wrong. The Sun, your ruler, aligned with Mercury on Thursday will
bring good advice from an unexpected direction.
Virgo August 24 to September 23 : Money or worries about a position
in a prominent warez group may be causing you to neglect other
responsibilities, but with your ruler Mercury positively linked
to Jupiter and the Sun this week, you are wonderfully placed to
decide how best to satisfy your personal needs. Dont be afraid
to spend time and money on yourself. You deserve it!
Libra September 24 to October 23 : No matter how disruptive the
events of the past 12 months have been, your life now appears to
be on an upward curve. In fact, this weeks stimulating
celestial influences should make you realize just how close you
are to reaching a certain goal. Just be careful not to overlook
an important detail.
Scorpio October 24 to November 22 : Something that seems like a
brilliant scheme may turn out to be no more than a routine
idea when inventive Mercury joins forces with optimistic
Jupiter early in the week. Go ahead by all means, but be sure
you appreciate the plans true nature before committing to it.
Sagittarius November 23 to December 21 : Matters of group status and
affiliation are once again on the agenda, but now it
appears that you have a very real shot at improving your
circumstances. Your ruler, Jupiter, linked to Mercury,
may provide you with a sensible solution as long as there
are not too many strings attached.
Capricorn December 22 to January 20 : Someone close is about to put
forward a proposal or suggestion that could have lasting
implications. Knowing exactly what you want from the
relationship will offer the best chance of achieving it.
Dont be influenced by others advice, your own judgment is
sound.

Subject : Phreaking for the Absolute Beginner
First off, you need to know that phone phreaking is ILLEGAL, and you
can get in trouble for it. But lets not worry about that yet. For the
beginner phreaker, I would suggest beige-boxing. Beige-boxing lets you
use somebody elses phone line to make calls. Calls that THEY have to
pay for. Here is what you are going to need :
1. A regular old touch-tone phone
2. A regular phone cord
3. Wire strippers
4. 2 alligator clips
5. Screwdriver
6. Electrical tape
7. Some 900 numbers to have fun with
All right, so you have all this stuff and now you need to know what
to do with it. First off, you will need to cut one end of your phone
cord off. Now strip the outside covering off about 4-5 inches. You
should see a red, green, yellow and a black wire. You will not be
needing the yellow or the black one, so you can either cut them both off
or leave them there. Now you need to strip the covering off the red and
the green wires. This normally cant be done with regular
wire-strippers, so I just use a knife.
After you have the RED and the GREEN wires stripped, you need to
attach the green one to a green alligator clip preferrably and the red
one to a red alligator clip. It makes it a lot easier to match the wire
colors to the color of the alligator clips the color thing isnt
important now, but it will be after you become more advanced. Now you
need to cover up this connection between the alligator clips and the
wires by wrapping it with electrical tape.
Now, you are ready to find a house or a phone box to phreak. It is
a LOT easier and safer beige-boxing off somebody elses house that is to
beige-box a bell phone box phone boxes are what you see in front of
your house, and on the side of the street, etc.. To find a house to
phreak, you will need to take a look around your neighborhood. It is
safest to do it on some old ladies house who lives close to you. And
only do this at night, after 11 pm is always good. The house should be
somewhat close to your house, because you dont want to have to walk
through a big neighborhood late at night, especially if you are under
18, because the cops will stop you and ask you what you are doing, and
ask you whats in your back pack. It would really suck to have to open
your bag and pull out a beige-box for the cop. And they get pissed and
tell you to go home.
Once you have found a house, be aware of your surroundings. Be sure
there are not people, feds, and pac-bell workers around. Now you will
need to go to the side of the house, where the utilities are. The
utilities consist of the fuse box, television, and TELEPHONE!. You
should see two panels, one labeled television, and one labeled
telephone with a little bell logo on it. As I hope you already have
figured out, we will be using the one that says telephone. Using a
flathead screwdriver, take off the panel, and you should see a grey
rubber covering. Take the rubber covering off, and you will see a small
black box with 4 screws sticking out or you might see 4 bolts sticking
out. Now take your alligator clips and clip them both onto 2 of the 4
screws. Now plug the phone cord into the phone, pick up the phone, and
you should now have a dial tone!
If you do not have a dial tone, you may not have connected the phone
cord wires to the alligator clips correctly, or you may need to
re-adjust the alligator clips onto the screw, or try the other 2 screws.
You can now call wherever you want and it doesnt cost you a penny. To
find out the number that you are calling from, call 1-800-MY-ANI-IS.
When you are done, make SURE that you cover up your tracks, so
suspision of your presence does not arouse. I ususally crank-call
people in New York I am in California by the way and fuck with them.
Another cool thing to do is call up some 900 numbers. Boy those numbers
really get expensive. Ive seen 7.50 per MINUTE. But who gives a
fuck, you dont have to pay for it. Harrassing the operator is also
fun. Have fun my fellow phreaks.

RblChickn Entropy, why the hell did you invite me here? You know Im
not gay. I dont even like being in channels like this.
Entropy I heard rumors that you were desperate for a relationship. I
heard you werent having much success with girls, so may be
you should give up on the opposite sex and start looking for
relationships with gay men like me.
* Entropy kisses Rebel Chicken. Lets do more. Im free for tonight.
RblChickn Eeeeiiiiiwwwww... what the hell... get away from me. Id
rather fuck a cow than fuck a man.
Entropy A cow rather than me? That hurts.
RblChickn Yea, thats right, Id rather fuck a cow like Winterhauk
than you.
Entropy Hey, Im only doing this to you as favor. I thought youd be
lonely. My friend Incarnate told me that youre Asian, and I
dig little Asian boys. Theyre so fun to play with. :
RblChickn Yes, Im Asian, but Im not a little boy, and Im not a toy
for you to play with. Why the hell do you like little Asian
boys anyway?
Entropy I gather great pleasure from fucking little boys, especially
Asian ones. Little Asian boys have tight anuses, its more
fun when its nice and tight. You should try it. :
* Entropy gives RblChickn more kisses and a BIG perverted smile. :
RblChickn Dam, I never knew you were gay. I used to respect you. You
used to be smart, and you used to be straight. How did all
this happen? Who did this to you? Who made you turn gay?
Entropy Nobody made me gay. And dont call me gay, Id rather call
myself a chick with a dick. But theres no use hiding any
longer, Ive been gay all my life. Ive just been living a
lie, and if you ever hear me say that Im not gay, then its
only because Im in a state of denial. When Im telling the
truth, I can easily come out and tell people that I like being
fruity. Im a faggot, and I like anuses.
RblChickn Youve been gay all your life and youve just been hiding
it? I pity you then. Some of us are just more fortunate
than others, I have little drive to go out and cruise for
chicks, but youve just been born with some kind of penis
defect or something. None of us were born perfect, but
you... youre a freak of nature.
Entropy I guess so. Well, my friend Incarnate, hes gay too. He was
the one who taught me how to fuck anuses. I guess I started
hanging around Incarnate too much. Some of Incarnate must
have rubbed off on me, or maybe he just rubbed me too hard one
night or something.

Subject : Blowing Up the World 9 Times?
Why did I write this? I thought RCN may need a relief breaker from
all of the usual stuff. Do not take the following list too seriously.
Heheheh... I just thought of this stuff up. And by the way. The Quiet
Riot, go take that lame group NFS Need for Speed and shove it up your
ass. That so called ripped install.exe was used by a group! So go
fucking steal a life.
As we know, the world has enough nuclear missles to blow up the
world exactly 9 times. The following are the top ten reasons why we
cant blow up the world 9 times :
THE TOP TEN LIST!
10. If the world blew up, where would we get hot dogs?
9. Because I want to live!
8. Rebel Chicken is still a virgin!
7. We cant find the key to unlock the failsafes on the missles.
6. We got alien invaders in my backyard stealing all the
plutonium!
5. We have to wait until July 4th. I want to see the movie
Independance Day.
4. Your mother is so fat that she would shield part of the world
from the explosion.
3. Once you blow up the world once, you cant blow it up again!
2. Damned President Clinton already sold all of our nuclear
weapons to the Communist Soviets.
And the number 1 reason is :
1. There wouldnt be any more RCNs made!

in many ways, RCN continues to benefit the scene.. even when we are not
near our computers.
The RCN logo is approximately 8x6 printed on the back of a

The new update to the Reality Check Network World Wide Web Site,
http://www.rcn.org/, adds many new features :
Speed Optimization : RCN.org is now speed optimized, which means
you spend less time waiting and more time browsing.
Better Back Issue Access : Its now quick and easy to scan through
RCNs back issues, each one has its full description online, to
make searching for the desired issue that much easier.
Better Interface : v2.0 brings an end to the confusing
conglomeration of pages that previously had existed. Now speed
through the icon driven interface to scan back issues of RCN and
other emags, send comments, read credits, and check out
merchandise and free files.
Text or JAVA Version : Whatever browser you use can now access the
RCN.org pages. Before only Netscape was allowed, but now LYNX and
other text base users can now access the pages.
New Look Graphics : The new graphics style are a nice change of
pace from the hard-edged style of before.
To become a file mirror, contact us in RCN on IRC, you must be able
to store all back issues in a publically accessible directory from the
WWW. A link will be created from RCN.org to your site, so users can
acquire issues from there if the main site becomes overloaded.
