Well, its time for the next incarnation of Algorhythm. Last years
was, and I say it perfectly honestly, very badly organised. Whats more,
its all my fault. those who know me realise how hard it was for me to
say that This years competition will see a far better organised
effort by the team running the competition, as well as some rule
changes. On to the info!
BTW, this is the first revision of this document the rules
should stay fairly constant, and things wont change much. I *will*
release a more up-to-date version of this file later on though, closer
to the competition itself.
- What *is* the Algorhythm competition? -
The Algorhythm music competition is a hopefully annual event run
to coincide with the Coven demoparty in Adelaide, Australia in the
middle of the year June/July sometime in 96. Last year
was the first, and we received a lot more enthusiasm than we expected,
with some excellent music from all over Australia. This years
competition has been extended to include any region that can be
considered part of Australasia... i.e. New Zealand, PNG ? : . It is
another attempt by PoP to wake up the talent that *we* know is here...
but the general public dont. When asked for their favourite scene muso,
people will generally reply with the name of an American or European
musician... this competition is here to announce to the world that we
southerners are just as good, if not *better*. :
- Why the name? -
The name was originally suggested jokingly by Muesli, who has a
passion for elitish slogans. It stuck, despite just about everyones
apparent inability to spell the damn thing correctly. It is pronounced
exactly the same as Algorithm.
- The Rules -
+ The competition is ONLY open to musicians in the Australasian
region. If youre not sure, contact me and find out. :
+ ALL work must be original. No remixes of previous work, by you
or anyone else, are permitted. All songs must be released for
Algorhythm for the first time... i.e. you cant submit a song
youve already distributed to the general public or used in a
production of any kind.
+ No rehashing of tunes youve heard on the radio. Anything with
any resemblance to Heres Johnny will score very badly.
Samples from other artist/radio tunes/etc. are permitted.
+ The submission must be packaged in the way mentioned below see
Packaging.
+ Musicians are limited to a maximum submission of two songs.
wave to Phorte :
+ Submissions must be in a genuine module format i.e. no MIDI
music etc. If the format is your own or not well-known, please
could you forward us a player as well.
- Prizes -
At the present time no prizes have been worked out... cash prizes
are too variable due to the fact that we cant estimate Coven96
attendance. Im attempting to locate a sponsor to help us out here
can anyone able to assist in this way contact me ASAP via one of the
methods outlined at the end of this document?
- Voting -
Preliminary voting will be carried out prior to the Coven 96 party,
and the final 10 entrants will be decided. And *this* time, MZ wont
ignore it and play the whole lot. This preliminary judging will be
carried out by a group of judges - if you wish to participate in
judging, drop me a message via one of the methods outlined at the end of
this document. Each song will be given a score out of twenty for each of
the following:
+ Creativity and Originality.
+ Use of and quality of samples.
+ Musical talent the difference between music and just noise
+ Integration does the song flow, or does it sound like its
got different sections tacked on one after the next?
Thus giving each module a score out of eighty. The average of the
four scores will be taken and added to that, giving us a total score out
of one hundred.
At Coven 96, the final ten modules will be played before the people
attending and each person will be asked to give a certain number of
points to each song 10 points for first place, 9 for second and so on
and the placings will be given according to the total number of points
scored by each song. Results will then be released by me, and an FTP/WWW
site for all songs will be available.
Can any Australasian demogroup interested in helping by putting the
top ten songs into a musicdisk release please contact me?
- Great - but how do I enter? -
Simple. Fill out an entry form, and package it in the method
explained below and send it to me via one of the following methods:
+ Uploading: Upload it to Room 1o1 no. below in the A96 entries area.
+ email: UUEncode or send in some fashion to justin@cyburbia.bns.com.au
+ FTP: Upload to ftp://cyburbia.bns.com.au/pub/music/a96/incoming/.
Contact me if you need special help of some sort. I can be
contacted after hours by voice on +61-8-379-2627.
- Packaging -
The filename of the song itself does not matter in the slightest,
provided it contains no hi-ascii :. All songs must be zipped up into a
fairly common archive i.e. ZIP, ARJ, LZH, RAR or UC2. The filename of
the archive is as follows:
A-xxxxxx.yyy - where xxxxxx represents the first six
letters of the songs filename, and yyy
is the archiver extension.
The entry form and any notes or information on the song in text format
must be included in the archive.
