In 1808, news reached the Americas that Napoleon had captured Spain and installed his own people to run it. In Venezuela, the reaction was one of horror. Still loyal to the Spanish king, they rejected Napoleonic code and wanted to rule Venezuela themselves. Over the course of two years, through arrests, forced exiles and deposing whoever was in charge at the time, the countrys elite agreed on a regime for independance from Spain, but not the King.
