In Italy, Napoleon Bonaparte assaulted the army of Piedmont and crushed them in two weeks. France could now focus its attention on the armies of Austria. French forces took control of an Austrian garrison at Mantua. The Austrians launched a series of attacks to take it back, but Napoleons forces kept them at bay, winning many battles. With a victory at Rivoli, Napoleon eliminated all Austrian troops in Italy.
